On a Thursday Zoom call with progressive activists, Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., said that the upcoming hearings by the Jan. 6 select committee probing the riot at the U.S. Capitol staged by supporters of former President Donald Trump will blow the roof off the House.
We are going to do everything we can to subpoena all the information we need and to enforce our subpoenas. But even if we dont get every last person in there, we are going to have hearings that I believe will be compared to the Watergate hearings, because they are going to blow the roof off the House in terms of explaining to America what actually happened in the attack on our democracy, Raskin, who sits on the select committee, told an audience of approximately 40,000 people who watched his remarks on Facebook.
While former Trump administration figures and supporters have defied subpoenas for information and testimony, Raskin said the committee had spoken with more than 400 witnesses to date who have already laid the groundwork for explosive hearings.
I hope everybody will watch and I hope everybody will discuss it and then it will lead to a report that, I hope again, will be a game changer in terms of American history, Raskin said.

(8,835 posts)if the hearings are covered by major networks in their entirety as it happens.......
If there was ever an event that should be broadcast in it's entirety, as it happens, this would be it.
The media covered OJ, non stop. And on a scale of 1 to a million, the OJ was a one, and this is a million....
We watched them do TWO impeachment hearings, the second pretty much a slam dunk on Trump.....and then a not guilty decision in the Senate.........I do hope this has a different out come, given the massive and overwhelming evidence, but I don't think it will be any different. The majority of their voters watch Fox News exclusively and listen to RW radio exclusively and they will not be showing a lot of the hearings, or a fair unbalanced job of reporting what actually happened.....

But, yeah, I DO wonder about the pandas, as well as their report on "Border Walls Being Built By Immigrant Labor!"

LOL...............Nothing about his speech. They treated it like it didn't happen. Instead they had continuous five minute trashing on anything and everything Biden was doing to destroy this country.......
It never changes. Murdoch and many others (if religious) will rot in hell..........

(35,685 posts)Your last sentence. Recent study shows the Fox News watchers also watch cnn and msnbc. I cant recall the figure exactly but it is somewhere around 32-37% of the time.
The problem is that when they watch, they are watching with a preconceived bias. They are watching for evidence that backs up their theories.
If it wasnt 4:30 a.m. and I wasnt on my iPad in bed, Id try to find that study.

(32,645 posts)Anyone who's old enough to remember the Watergate hearings will agree, it's not all fun and games. There are lots of slow days and not every witness gives "bombshell" testimony. This will test your ability to pay attention and keep a scorecard. But it WILL all be worth it when it's finally over.

At the time I was teaching a class of physically handicapped high school aged kids. They were transfixed by the hearings. One kid, who had severe cerebral palsy, painstakingly typed a paper on the subject one painful letter at a time. It was inspiring and humbling to watch.

(16,420 posts)I know, shame on me! My excuse is that I hardly watched TV at all during that time. I was a full time college student with a part time job, and I didn't even own a TV. And, well, other than being opposed to the Vietnam War, I just wasn't very interested in politics back then.
Of course, I was very much aware of the excitement surrounding the whole thing, but I wasn't following the details at all. I eventually realized that I was missing something very important, but it was a lot harder to go back and fill in the gaps in one's knowledge back then, so I never really did that until years later (when there was an internet, and books that had been written about it).
This time, I'll be ready and waiting, OF COURSE!

(6,890 posts)At the time I was active duty military so I really couldn't - I had a job to do. Plus IIRC that happened while I was at a duty sation where a rape, and later a manslaughter (unrelated, occurred in the office I worked in - both after nornla business hours - but- at least for the rape - I was the duty officer and had to notify my boss - all I could think of to sat was "Your marine raped my marine in our office."
You could say I was distracted. I was't ignoring Watergate, of course, but I wasn't watching hearings either.

(989 posts)That the GOP causes chaos, disorder, and death when it's in power, perhaps we can save our majorities in Congress.
This hearing will go a long way towards showing that chaos like what we observed during the 1/6 insurrection is what we will be seeing pretty much daily if we give the right-wing even more power in the coming midterms and in 2024 if the GOP candidate receives fewer EVs.

(16,420 posts)All I've heard is "early" in 2022. I have a feeling it won't be much longer, though, based on things like what was said in this phone call. I don't think Jamie Raskin would be dropping such tantalizing hints if it wasn't going to be SOON.

(30,745 posts)During Watergate, I went to work in the daytime, and watched the hearings replayed on PBS until I could not stay awake any more. I got little sleep during that time. Many of my co-workers did the same. We wheeled a TV in to watch the Nixon resignation live.
I lived in a red area. Many of the republicans were more sickened by the behavior of Nixon and his henchmen than I was. We got Jimmy Carter as President. He is one of the best men who have ever lived.

(3,417 posts)The messaging won't matter. If the red hats have not seen through this con after six years, a house committee seen as partisan by the deluded cult followers are not likely to change their minds. They are committed. Bringing them new facts will not create a "EUREKA!..I HAVE BEEN AN IDIOT" moment.
They are too invested in the cult. They only talk to fellow travelers. Many of them are evangelicals who, more than anything, want a king (aka Jesus). Trump will do in a pinch. Critical thinking is just WAY too hard. So much easier to "follow your gut" to a construct where you have no responsibility to give back to the community, where TAKING as much as you can is ideology, and only people that look and speak like you have value.
Sad, but true.

(16,927 posts)BUT.....
7 million more wanted Joe over TFG. RepubliQan registration is under 40%.
What we must do is present another case as to why TFG & Co. is such bad news for our country (MORE positive up-dates regarding the progress that Joe has made would go a L O N G way towards helping that!) - AND, again, make sure we GET OUT THE VOTE!!!!
And 'getting out the vote' may be even harder this time - crooked RepubliQan laws and states working to restrict voting rights - NOT a good thing.
So. we RISE UP - and fight even harder!!!!

(42,770 posts)There's got to be a logic to it IMHO. Like make it very clear what the objective is for that day? Example:. The Rally.... And every witness relates to how that was organized? Who was in charge? What input did trump give. What did the insurrectionists do to prepare. Etc.etc. or maybe start with The Election and failed fraud cases?
Logical sequencing?

(56,828 posts)if the media actually broadcasts it fairly & doesn't have Trump supporting talking heads on 24/7 to whine, cry and shriek their lies & misinformation, it might actually succeed.
I'm just afraid that the media will be covering the next purchase made by Kamala Harris, Joe Biden's choice of exercise equipment or the Trump border crisis before they'll cover these hearings.

(56,828 posts)Several state GOP organizations made slates of false electors as part of the plot to declare Trump the winner in 2020. Should have been a big story, but we get "Biden takes the train too much" this past weekend. And, at his big rally, Trump lies and says that white people can't get vaxxed in New York - the blatant racism was a non story.
