We don't have plows, and not much salt for the roads. Last good snow was in 2018

I ended up quitting a job over it.

(12,429 posts)There had been a rare November snowfall the night before, not even an inch, and the roads were practically free of traffic, like in some apocalyptic movie. There was a car way ahead of me as I approached a bridge and sure enough they noticeably sped up crossing the bridge.

(115,735 posts)Everything else seems to be normally stocked. We had a snowstorm yesterday but we get them all the time so people don't tend to panic-buy. I have no idea what happened to the cat food, though; that might get to be a serious problem at my house.

I live 7 miles from Boone. We havent really had a big one since December 2018, when we got about 18 inches. 2 feet? Havent seen one like that in quite a few years.
Here in the mountains we are a little better equipped to deal with it - the towns and counties have snow plows and theyve been salting all day today. When the snow ends, everyone who has a truck also has a blade they can put on the front of it, so parking lots and driveways generally get cleared pretty quickly. Of course, 2 feet will take awhile to clear!

There are NO plows here- very little salt. But, it's NC, so if you just stay home it'll melt in a day or two.

But the bigger problem, at least in my grocery, was lack of employees. Fish counter and. Deli were closed because of people shortage.
In my town everyone entering a business MUST wear a mask and there is always 100% compliance. So those employees must have got Omicron elsewhere.

(17,931 posts)I remember what it was like down there. Same growing up in TN. I'd usually grab a few odds and ends we might need if we couldn't get out. Problem was snow removal equipment or lack there of. When I lived "on the mountain" in western NC years ago, that wasn't much of a problem. Roads were plowed and salted as the storm progressed. Parking lot clearing began as soon as the storm passed. "Off the mountain" in places like Asheville, Hendersonville or Hickory, it was a whole different story.
When the next variant comes that may be the end of us all, milk and bread will go before tests or vaccines.

Sleeping bag.

Something about spinning around in reverse with the headlights illuminating the snow banks and the church was so cool and calming.

I feel like it's a tease. It's been 3 years since we've had a decent storm that left snow on the ground and I'll be pleasantly surprised if we get that tomorrow.
also particular to this area: the schools will be closed through Wednesday or whatever. Apparently during a storm some time before I moved from CA to NC, kids were left on buses for 9 hours once and clearly no one is letting that happen again.
Red Mountain
(1,735 posts)It was a quick snow that packed down to ice instantly. NOTHING could move on it. People around here definitely don't have snow tires much less chains and that's what you would have needed. Interstates were parking lots.
Maybe a inch or two of snow, tops.
I left work early that day.

(28,799 posts)remembers that storm. I worked with a woman who had taken like 8 hours to get from Chapel Hill to Garner.
2013 or 2014 was the closest to that since I got here in 2007. It was kinda funny, because I had surgery the day before it hit, and as the snow was blowing sideways out the hospital window, the nurse burst into my room to let me know I could go home. I laughed at her and told her "you don't even get to go home today." It was already all over the news that cars all over the triangle were being abandoned on the road.

Red Mountain
(1,735 posts)Northern Durham county. Grocery stores are pretty well stocked. Went this morning. Little busier than normal.
We have snowplows in NC just not the type they have up north. Around here they strap a plow on the front of a regular DOT dump truck, add a spreader to the back and fill it with sand. They don't have nearly enough to cover secondary roads in the first day. Maybe day two if it's not too bad. Biggest problem tends to be that delay in getting to the secondary roads means they've been driven on extensively and packed down to ice before the plow gets there. At that point they simply aren't the right tool for the job. The strap on plows skate over the ice.
We wait for better weather to make things slushy. Might take a day or two. The plows can handle it then. It will probably refreeze overnight.
Primary and secondary roads have been sprayed down with brine. We should be warm enough that it will be effective.
Freezing rain and long term power loss are the big concerns with this storm and it doesn't look good. .2" to .4" of ice accrual and 30 mph gusts aren't a good combination. The pines snap off 10-15' up the trunk. I can remember a couple of awful storms when I was a kid. Transformers blowing up like lightning in the distance all night and deep thumps from trees hitting the ground.
It looks worse west of the triangle until you get to the foothills. The mountains hopefully will get more snow than freezing rain.

Kang Colby
(1,941 posts)Its the same story everywhere. Carolinas might get a few inches of snow, that shouldnt be an excuse to buy 6 loaves of bread, 120 bagel bites, 10 lbs of Reeses, and 80 rolls of toilet paper to clean it all up eventually. Sad but also sort of amusing thats how people spend their time. Weather says a few inches of snow and every idiot and their mother is at the store buying excess while also probably crying about grocery prices. Guess what excess demand drives? Price increases.

Yeah, we're more used to it, have the things in place to deal w it. For me since I foolishly slipped on ice in my very late 30s, and was out of work for 6 months, been half terrified of ice, and some what of snow since then.
I was in DC once overnight when snow started that next morning, I kinda laughed bc I'd never seen a reaction of like sending non essential fed workers home at 3PM when there was only ?3 inches on the ground...AND...
I also felt bad since they didn't know how to deal w it!
IronLionZion
(45,457 posts)Or Dems or something socialist. Some DC stores have unnecessarily aggressive notes blaming state governors who shut down highways during snow which kept deliveries from going through. But no one ever blames the hoarders who buy up way more than they need.

I should correct that. Oat milk and vodka on whole wheat bread sandwiches. Oh and that Velveeta block of hell should come in handy if we need it
Fact is that NC has a shit ton of Floridiots or half backs to totally fudge up the historic panic buying of borderline essentials when faced with inclement weather
Plus the Duke Energy overlord has never considered burying power lines so when a half inch of ice hits and the wind blows it it lights out.
Bring it on!
