Jail sued for giving inmates ivermectin: "They used us as an experiment"

Agroup of men detained at Washington County Detention Center in Arkansas say that the jail's medical staff gave them the anti-parasite drug ivermectin last year, without their consent, to treat COVID-19, while telling them the pills were "vitamins." On Wednesday, the American Civil Liberties Union, on behalf of the inmates, filed a federal lawsuit against the jail and its doctor.

The Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have repeatedly warned against the use of ivermectin. The FDA has only approved the medication for humans to treat river blindness, intestinal strongyloidiasis, head lice and rosacea.

The lawsuit claims that medical staff at the jail gave the men ivermectin as early as November 2020, and that the men did not become aware of what the pill was until well after they received it. At a local finance and budget committee meeting last August, county sheriff Tim Helder confirmed that the facility's doctor Dr. Robert Karas prescribed ivermectin.

According to the lawsuit, as well as CBS News' previous interview with one of the inmates and plaintiffs, 30-year-old Edrick Floreal-Wooten, the jail's medical staff told inmates the ivermectin pills were "vitamins," "antibiotics," and/or "steroids."

This is much more analogous to that comparison.

Yeah, I'm rooting for massive damages settlements for the inmates. Sadly, it won't come out the pockets of the guilty parties, but it will almost certainly impact regular citizens who had nothing to do with this heinousness.

The sheriff responsible for this mess was elected by the taxpayers who will have to foot the bill for whatever settlement is eventually reached.

Sheriff Helder is no less responsible because he's a Democrat. He was told that the Doctor was experimenting on the inmates back in July, 2021 and allowed it to continue. The folks in Washington County, AR have been electing him for nearly 20 years.

This was a big story last summer.

Washington County sheriff confirms use of ivermectin at Detention Center

"I think we need to reevaluate who we are using to provide medical care if they are disregarding FDA guidelines and giving de-wormer to detainees at our county jail," Madison said. "It's very disturbing to me that that's the level of care we're providing."

The Sheriff's Office proposed 2022 budget shows Karas is asking for a 10% increase in its medical services contract.

Helder said he was informed of the use of the medication in July by emails from Karas Correctional Health. Helder said the company has been "an amazing partner" for the Sheriff's Office throughout the covid-19 pandemic. Chief Deputy Jay Cantrell said the company has provided quality medical care before and during the pandemic.

Helder said he will defer to a doctor on matters of treatment.

"Whatever a doctor prescribes, that's out of my bailiwick," Helder said. "But I will stake their record against any medical provider in any correctional facility in the United States. Doctors prescribe. They've been to medical school. I haven't."

A knee jerk reaction when I see malfeasance or neglect on the part of one in authority.

Thanks for the background.

The Sheriff and Doctor should lose everything that they own, including their freedom.
