Ron DeSantis Opens Antibody Centers That Are Useless Against Omicron

"SNIP......

If Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis were a responsible leader dedicated to the well-being of his constituents, he would have made clear that the Regeneron monoclonal antibody being administered at his five new treatment sites is all but useless in the current COVID-19 surge.

But DeSantis is DeSantis, and therefore his own top priority. He is happy to offer false hope in the middle of a pandemic—as his state breaks infection records week after week—if he believes it is to his political advantage.

Last month, DeSantis held a press conference outside Ocala Medical Center with a sign reading “Early Treatment Saves Lives” and touted monoclonal antibodies as the answer to the COVID crisis. His surgeon general, Joe Ladapo, described vaccines, masks, and testing as a “trifecta” of “lunacy.”

Omicron had already begun to spread in Florida and elsewhere, so quickly that it was soon responsible for the overwhelming majority of new cases. The federal government stopped distributing two of the three mjaor monoclonal antibody treatments—Regeneron and bamlanivimab—on the grounds they were ineffective against the new variants. The third treatment, sotrovimab, remains in such short supply it is reserved for only the most vulnerable people.

2. Maybe someone from Florida can explain DeSantis

I get that there are a lot of people in Florida who would vote for Satan if he was a Republican (and I'm not saying the Prince of Darkness isn't a Republican). DeSantis was elected governor thanks to his political affiliation, which is all a lot of voters look at. But even at that, it's not like he won in a landslide. He beat Andrew Gillum by 0.4% of the vote, fewer than 33,000 votes out of 8 million. Wouldn't that suggest a certain vulnerability for DeSantis in running for re-election? If he's going to win again, he has to avoid losing too many votes. Is turning the state into a petri dish for Covid really a good strategy, especially when those dying of the virus are probably going to be DeSantis voters?

And yet, there seems to be no reporting - and I mean none - that talks about how badly DeSantis' ongoing shenanigans are turning off Florida voters. Is he increasing his popularity with Floridians? Or is nobody asking those questions because they're fearful that the unstoppable political juggernaut of DeSantis would visit retribution on them?

I don't think Floridians are irretrievably stupid. A lot of people who voted for DeSantis in 2018 (if they're still alive) have to be reconsidering that vote, and predisposed to casting a ballot for whoever comes out of the Democratic primary.

5. Not to defend DeSantis... but article misstates the truth.

The Sotrovimab antibody treatment HAS been proven to be effective vs. Omicron and Florida has been administering it and trying to get more of it... it's in quite short supply

https://cbs12.com/news/local/desantis-says-florida-will-receive-additional-30000-monoclonal-doses

I wouldn't get any hard news from TDB... it's on the level of Politicus.

Clinics are giving out Regeneron antibodies which don't work well against Omicron.

7. No it's not

It's saying DeSantis opens up useless treatment centers.

Florida is administering Sotrovimab TODAY at the centers... and FL has requested more of it from the Fed Govt

https://cbs12.com/news/local/desantis-says-florida-will-receive-additional-30000-monoclonal-doses

Currently, the State of Florida receives an average of 2,808 doses of Sotrovimab a week from the federal government.

The article uses a 2 week old DeSantis quote about Regeneron and the other one...

Recently... all the focus has been on Sotrovimab as it's the only effective one

"Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced last week the state had secured 15,000 doses of Regeneron from the federal government to help treat COVID-19."

9. Maybe to treat the cases of Delta still presenting?

Every last dose of Sotrovimab that Florida receives is being administered to people sick with Omicron.

I wouldn't expect hard news from TDB or Politicus.

10. How would know which variant somebody who gets Regeneron actually has?

Those specific tests are not being done for vast majority of people being tested.
