Lately I've been paying more attention to the sheer number of YEARS that many of us have been friends, associates, acquaintances.....etc and I'm starting to think about this group of ageing woman who post on DU as 'The Sisters'.
You all know who you are. And YOU, (Celerity and coupla others) despite being young-uns, you belong to the sisterhood.
In many other aspects of society, we ageing females are discarded as of no use; we cannot breed or entice men. IMO, that is our power. And what a true power it is.
Older women have ALWAYS held the most power in society; this is why their most vehement opponent is their diametric opposite; the young man. Not all young men, just some.
As many of us approach and pass twenty years of online friendship, I salute my sisters. I love you all, respect your opinions, and want you to know that you make me a better person.

So many smart, giving women here on DU. I learn something new every day.

(15,545 posts)It's quite liberating to boot. My hairdresser says that boomer women are making silver hair fashionable and they are coming in to her shop asking to have their hair actually colored silver!
Here's to older, sage women everywhere!!!

(16,117 posts)right now, it's a muddy in-between stage so I often have purple or pink hair. I rarely go out these days, but the bright color makes me happy.

(17,174 posts)I really wish change could happen via an internet forum but seriously doubt the probability.
At my age, memberships and affiliations are unnecessary. It's all about how I define myself and I'm increasingly aware of the total inconsequence of our lives in the general scheme of the universe.
No, that is not a sad thought; it's a realistic, comforting thought that places me in the correct place in 4 billion years of evolution.

(34,112 posts)19 years and counting. I am recently turned 68 and very happy to be that age. It is a pleasure to read all of you as you write. Us older women have seen our lives change in so many ways and I am glad we have enough here to have support as we watch everything we worked for get taken away.
Personally, I don't know what others think of my use at this age. I think I am capable of more every year and am so happy to be in the place where I do not have to care much about what someone else thinks of me.
Thanks for this thread.

(2,771 posts)I was going to ask if I could be part of the sisterhood since Im old though a relative newbie here. But, its almost a decade! So not that much of a newbie. Clearly Im old though since I didnt realize 10 years had passed. But I still like the idea of sisterhood.

(16,455 posts)But I am old! 71, to be exact. And I won't lie; I love that there are so many of us old folks here. I enjoy interacting with people of all ages, but the older I get, the more I enjoy the company of wise old women.

(22,719 posts)If I live until August 28th, I will have been here for ten years. Seems like yesterday when I joined. I will also celebrate my 65th birthday this year. Also, seems like yesterday that I was wearing bell bottom jeans and halter tops.
Now, I'm living in love with my grey hair but can we talk about electrolysis?
I love my uppity women friends most of all. Wonderful post, canetoad. Thank you.

(41,990 posts)Its all a learning experience, or maybe a confirming one. We are dismissed, feared, ignored, avoided, and sometimes recognized for the forces of nature we are now were free of a lot of the chains of youth. If were lucky and smart we can do so much. And do it together.

(41,990 posts)Look up the books This Chair Rocks by Ashton Applewhite. She has a website by the same name, and this Ted Talk and other interviews on YouTube.
And Elderhood, a book by Louise Aronson, was nominated for a Pulitzer.
Theyre both accessible, enraging and uplifting at once. They pertain to everyone, not just women, but were certainly mentioned as having our unique issues.

(42,286 posts)Altho I swear I was here earlier than that--just didn't register. I don't post as much as some, but I do appreciate the women of DU.
In fact, it was the large number of female posters that kept me here over the years. Back in the day (and still true now) opinion boards were dominated by men who thought being loud and pushy made them right.

(2,824 posts)Sorry, I'm introverted and mostly lurk, I don't post unless I really have something to add to a discussion. i'm 64 and stuck here in Redstatistan often feel isolated. It is ladies like UpInArms, JudiLynn and LeftyLadyfromMO and all the rest, that keep me from feeling all alone. DU helps keep me sane. Thank you all for posting throughout the 18 years I have been on DU. Would like to give you all a big cyber hug!

(50,299 posts)my last old cat might get a bad diagnosis from the vet next week, I was kind of weepy. I got into one of those black holes where you start to think back on all the things you've loved - human and animal - who are long gone and how you're the next generation on the chopping block. I'm usually rather content with how I feel about death and dying, but for some reason I had a dark cloud over my head earlier today. Feeling better now and your post has helped. I appreciate all the older people (we know who we are - LOL) on DU for your long memories and insight on the messes du jour. I've been here since 2004 and despite our occasional bickering have enjoyed it all.

(15,545 posts)Thank you for this thread. I lurked on DU for awhile before joining in 2003, so I've been here at least 20 years and I'm almost 73. It's my go-to place for news, but also to learn.
You are absolutely correct that older women hold the power. I have no qualms about wielding it whenever I damned well feel like it!

(3,695 posts)I stopped trying to be nice. I stopped worrying about what I said. Life is great.
I live in an industrial area, and the ratio of males to females is pretty much even. The guys my age are more anxious for a mate than the women my age. (I'm married.) My single friends have no interest in anything but casual relationships if that, and the men seem to find someone to take of them before it's too late.
