Short of success, I believe the silver lining from this vote was critical to the American Peoples' awareness as to how important each of our United Senators consider democracy to be and where they actually stand on the issue.
For any democratic nation to function well, the people have to be aware as to who supports what in order to more effectively hold their government accountable.
The filibuster is nothing but an enemy of accountability, smoke and mirrors meant to hide or separate cowardly Senators from the people.
The filibuster only makes it easier for Senators to be bought and paid for, or at least leased for a while by big money, because they can essentially hide their voting record from the people.
So I believe this vote will be invaluable for years to come in allowing the American People a better gauge of their Senators and will make it easier to have accountability if there is to be any.

(7,412 posts)To put them on record as trying. It wont hurt Manchin at all, Sinema may not care about running again regardless, shes gonna have a tough primary if so.

(7,412 posts)I thought they just liked spoiling elections by peeling a few votes off the Democrats, figured they would just want the biggest name they can get to fundraise on.

(58,378 posts)that has only served to sell the people, not actually engage them.
That's why American People in general have become more apathetic.
It's imperative that we keep January 6th front and center and all true believers of freedom and democracy do the same.

(6,011 posts)some damage to the GOP, because that's the only thing that will shine a light on who is fucking everything up. It will sway some at election time, but I don't think it will help with all of the election rigging that the GOP is actively perpetrating in certain regions. Maybe I'm wrong.
Uncle Joe
(58,378 posts)despite their election rigging, I believe the Republicans will get their ass handed to them in November.

(15,286 posts)In fact, in Pennsylvania every Dem who is currently running to replace Pat Toomey has pledged to vote to end the filibuster if elected to the Senate. The interesting part is that Conor Lamb, a proud moderate and centrist, is among them.
Also, jmho, but once the 1/6 committee hearings go live on TV and Americans hear the facts and the tick-tock, the fealty to Trump will collapse just like it did to Nixon during the Watergate hearings. That lead to the a tidal wave of Watergate reform candidates being elected in 1974 in both the House and Senate. I could see that happening again.

(26,110 posts)Will we have any hearings if Sinema switches to Republican?!

(15,286 posts)Control of the Senate is irrelevent. Further, the televised hearings will happen before the Nov election.
Remember the Watergate hearings happened in the summer and Nixon resigned in Aug of '74, just 2 months before the 1974 mid-terms.

(11,950 posts)My question was, should any of them be elected, but we still lose control of the Senate, are they now pledging that they would vote with Republicans to get rid of the filibuster ?
Deminpenn
(15,286 posts)to pass something with 50 votes, they won't need any Dems to help them ditch the filibuster. They will all vote "aye" as a block like they always do.
