The Number on Great-Grandpa's Arm is a short 2018 HBO documentary about the Holocaust. It is intended to be a gentle introduction to the subject suitable for children,[1] featuring a conversation between a 10-year-old boy, Elliott, and his 90-year-old great-grandfather, Jack, a survivor of Auschwitz from World War II.[2][3][4][5] The exchange is woven with historical footage and hand-painted animation to tell a story of Jewish life in Eastern Europe before and during the Holocaust.[6]
The Number on Great-Grandpas Arm was directed and produced by Emmy award winner Amy Schatz.[2][7][5] The animation was done by Jeff Scher, who won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation for his work in 2018.[6][8]

(54,436 posts)I will see if it can be viewed somewhere without having HBO.
I once knew an Auschwitz survivor in The Hague. He still had the number tattooed on his arm. Really smart, a little whacko, but a funny guy. Quite successful, though he lived very modestly. His wife was a gentile from Austria whose Dutch was fluent but with an atrocious Viennese accent. Very funny to hear if you understood both Dutch and German.
He was a huge soccer fan, and often traveled with the Dutch national team when they had important matches outside of the Netherlands. One time, they had a match in Poland, and he went with them. While he was there, he made a side trip to Auschwitz, which he hadn't seen since the liberation in 1945. I asked him why in the world he would want to go back there after what he had been through. He said he just wanted to stand at the gates and be able to say "I am still here, and you are no more than a relic."

(7,852 posts)I was born into dysfunction... my mother's screaming nightmares, severe depression, survivor's guilt...my father trusting no one, forever anticipating a second Holocaust...deep holes chiseled into the slab under our beds, filled with money/jewelry (bribes, insuring our escape)...my parents are long gone but living in the here and now, with our democracy under threat from within, they weren't wrong

(45,514 posts)I've listened to Holocaust survivors speak about it here in DC's Holocaust museum. It's terrifying stuff to hear about the worst of human nature.

(17,939 posts)A gentle introduction to the most horrific act of inhumanity in at least the last millennium. That wasn't easy, I'm sure.

(67,782 posts)....the war. It wasn't uncommon to see people with numbers on their arms. One of my parents' good friends had a grandparent with one of those tattoos. They explained to us why, but we were too young to get the significance of it.
