Republicans have big advantages on several of voters' key concerns

Washington Post

There are a number of indicators that the 2022 midterms are going to be bad for the Democratic Party.

President Biden’s approval rating is in the low 40s in most polls (with recent offerings from Quinnipiac University and Fox News presenting potential outliers in opposite directions). Democratic members of Congress are announcing planned retirements at a rapid clip, a sign that they might see the writing on the wall, but also meaning that the party loses the advantage of incumbency. The Republican Party has gained ground in party identification, as it did before its last two wave elections, and generic ballot polling (that is, asking voters whether they plan to vote for an unnamed Democrat or an unnamed Republican for the House) shows a slight advantage for the GOP.

Given how narrow the Democrat’s House majority is at this point — barely in the double digits — the odds of a flip after November are high.

Then there are more esoteric signals, including from that new Fox News poll. In a survey that found unusually strong support for Biden overall and an essential tie on the generic ballot, Fox’s pollsters also found that Republicans have the confidence of voters on several issues at the heart of the public’s concern. In at least one case, surprising confidence.

The Fox News poll presented respondents with a list of several issue areas, asking which party would do a better job addressing them. Republicans held advantages on the majority, but it was about evenly split. Interestingly, on about half the issues polled, one party was seen as better able to address them by at least 10 percent of the opposing party. You can see that in the first two issues below; the light red shows the 26 percent and 19 percent of Republicans that view the Democratic Party as better able to handle climate change and racism, respectively.

Being D+22 on climate change is valueless if most voters don't rank climate change high on their list of concerns...and they don't.
