Clearly at 83 he is still not only capable but adept at his job, so he could have kept going. Despite his position on being non-political he made this choice based on the current political and congressional timetable. True patriot.

It must be painful for him to have to work alongside some of them, especially the arrogant prima donnas.
It has been reported by journalists covering the SC that Justice Breyer sometimes holds his head in his hands while some of his colleagues are speaking.
