Manchin supports "targetted" Child Tax Credit - link

And on the child tax credit: Manchin said he didn't want to see it go away but again stated it must be capped. "We're going to make sure that we can help — and continue to help —those in need," he said. "I'm all open to looking at anything and everything that helps people but targeting it better."

https://www.politico.com/minutes/congress/01-27-2022/new-pac-launches/

I assume this means something like a 60k earnings cap and a work requirement. I seem to recall him proposing something along those lines at one time.

When you consider the cost of housing and other living expenses in most large metro areas. Income limits on government programs are always set unrealistically low.

In West Virginia and Northern VA. My daughter makes almost $55,000 dollars a year. She is a working mother, a college graduate with a spouse who is still in school working on an advanced degree. My wife and I supplement them heavily as they can not live on that money. They could easily live on the same $55 000 in West Virginia.

Rent $1540 a month for a 2 br 1 bath 700 Squ foot garden style apartment, third floor walk up. Not near metro but on bus line to pentagon metro.

Daycare 1650 per month, that is with a small break they get based on their income.

Comes to about 38,000 a year which is about her take home after health insurance, social security and taxes.

Soon her husband will finish his program and will start working, contributing and paying his student loans. She also has student loans but thankfully has not had to pay them during Covid. He will start working when the payments start up again.

These are losing proposals for House Reps in Blue States with a high cost of living.

I wouldn't want Congressman Malinowski to vote for that. None of the NJ Delegation should go along with that.

But there are certain house members that CANNOT vote for that.

You can't tell a family of four in Hunterdon County NJ living in a small home - making 110K a year . . .

That you voted for the 60K limit but couldn't get the SALT Cap lifted for them . . . and win an election for the House.

I think this can pass withOUT the blue state high cola members of the house voting for it.

And they probably pay about 7-8K in state income taxes.

There is a belief that we all live in McMansions in NJ. Its simply not true. People live in 1200 square foot ranch homes. Or Sears Roebuck homes they've fixed up.

I can't tell a cop and a teacher to *suck it up*. Especially if they are 6-7 years into a house. They bought that 160K fixer-upper with a 100 + year promise from the Federal that people should not be taxed twice.

I know DUers in lower cost of living states find this absurd - but I *know* that couple. They aren't moving their mixed race (black/latino) family to a regressive state.

You know - my parents put me in a private high school for social reasons in the 10th grade. We didn't have all the bells and whistles that public school kids did - but we came out of school prepared to work or go to university. The tuition now is about 8K a year - with the same results.

What if we looked at education at a federal level and alloted 8K per each American student K-12? All the gaps could be filled in by State Income and Local Property taxes. Bake sales and candy sales for extras as we did in the late 80's and early 90's?

57% of my property tax goes towards our local schools. Our county got a little less from the state in this years budget due to declining attendance.

I would gladly pay a few thousand more to Trenton and my Borough to make sure our kids in NJ have what they need. I do NOT have children.

Are folks just selfish in places like Tennessee? They can't pay a state income tax?

Makes my mom pay taxes on her Social Security - but it is what it is.

Good point - it really hurt our seniors here when the Republicans scammed us like that.

The high cost of living states, especially in the population dense north east corridor developed pre World War I (1913) to be the best and offer the most.

We are being punished for providing our Seniors with lift services in our boroughs, social workers on our police force, and clean water . . . something Michigan should have done by raising their state income taxes.

Good for Newark that they are finally addressing it after trying to cover it up for years.

Flint got all the publicity, but there are thousands of cities all over the country that have much higher lead levels than Flint ever did. Including Newark, NJ, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Washington DC, and Baltimore among others.

The issue is generally caused by lead pipes inside people's private homes that are not the cities responsibility.

Before 2021 the upper limit a family could make was $400,000. But you had to have some income to claim it(a work requirement)

Then in 2021 we added a grand, took away the work requirement but capped the income level at $150,000

I believe this hurt us in the Virginia suburbs, and if we allow manchin to turn it into a welfare program we will lose many voters

It has helped child poverty a lot and we should not be having a work requirement. I’d also prefer the income cap go up to $100,000 for singles.

The social safety net really took a hit from the 80s on. We need to build it up again.
