and theyre being noncommittal about its future i.e., whether it will disappear behind the paywall.

(11,619 posts)There is an unlimited version on-line. I found out and can't leave it alone. Now I have to go try "there", "found", "leave" and "alone" just because I can't help it.

(2,244 posts)They should consider the potential blowback to putting it behind a paywall but I don't know that they care.

(58,785 posts)This was a nice gift that fell in to a lot of laps, but there's a whole world of possibilities to replace it with.
chia
(2,244 posts)Maybe you don't appreciate that, but others do.
It was simple, enjoyable, accessible to everyone, free, and a bit of refreshingly delayed gratification in a 24/7 world.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)if Mr. Wardle no longer labors to provide it to us for free. It IS a "nice thing," and his hard work and creativity have paid off.
Thank you, Mr. Wardle, and again, congratulations.

(61,712 posts)It would be smart of the NYT to keep it free and attract customers to their paper.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)after a while anyway, and they can be glad if the Times doesn't charge extra for it like it does the crossword and recipes. Maybe they'd throw it in with the crossword, which people can subscribe to alone for $40, without the paper.
I'm thinking there are a whole lot of Wordle puzzles in the public domain that I've never done and will keep me for some while. I got all 5 letters on the third try this morning, then required another two rows to get them in order.

(53,072 posts)there don't seem to be any clues, just random guesses at any word. Am I missing something?
edhopper
(33,633 posts)are the clues.
After the first guess, it lets you know which letters are correct, and which are in the right space.
Gaugamela
(2,496 posts)arise and then count as the first two attempts. That covers the vowels except y, and several common consonants, and provides enough clues to work from.

The New York Times bought Wordle. Here's an exclusive inside look at the gameplay of the first answer they've chosen.

NYT says, apparently, it will still be free. I hope they don't change it. Regardless of the negativity, it's just a nice little word game.

It's a nice story - guy invented the game for his wife, who liked word puzzles. Offered it free online. Went "viral."
Now he's a multi-millionaire.

Reminds me of when the NYT decided to hit subscribers with an extra charge to see their recipes. Not hardly. There are 10,000 times more recipes coming on the web alone than theirs, and at some point theirs escape their control anyway. If someone mentions one that sounds good, I google it.

(4,211 posts)It's like a crossword puzzle without clues. Each letter of the alphabet is assigned a number, and you fill in the puzzle by determining/guessing which numbers stand for which letters. You're given at least 1 letter to start and you work from there. Loads of fun.

(14,061 posts)Puzzle subscription costs about $7/mo for the crossword and Spelling Bee. At one time I was also paying for the paper, so I got billed twice.
There used to be a couple more logic puzzles I could access, but not now. Maybe theyve been discontinued. Im not willing to pay much more than $7, so I hope the Times keeps its word (no pun intended).
I like Wordle. I enjoy it more than Spelling Bee, TBH. Anything that makes me think, especially in the morning, isnt a time-waster.
