(768 posts)It's not cowardice that stops them. It's the knowledge that they will lose their seats if they dare to oppose Trump.
I'm not defending them at all, but one reality is that if many of them opposed Trump, they would not be re-elected and would likely be replaced with someone far worse.
It illustrates the sort of people that run for office these days. No decent person wants to be a Representative or a Senator.
Justice matters.
(6,929 posts)Or rather, not doing, by opposing Biden's agenda for the peopie and voting rights too?
What is worse than that?
InstantGratification
(158 posts)But it doesn't take much imagination to think of worse than that. Take all the R's who despise Trump but go along because they are afraid of his influence with the base and replace them with the True Believers. Most "normal" R's (I use the term normal veeerrrry loosely) don't go around calling for locking up the J6 committee, they just malign the committee's purpose. Newt Gingrich, on the other hand, has called for jailing those that dare to investigate TFG. Not hard to imagine that Newt's malice would extend to enemies outside of congress as well....
If his ilk ever control government again, you will get a very graphic look at "what is worse". I don't say that to put you down, just to point out that democracy is still in dire peril if R's retake congress. TFG's sycophants control the GOP, it will turn into a blood bath while they purge "normal" R's (the ones with a dimly flickering sense of decency) and replace them with Cult45 activists who will burn down everything and everyone who doesn't kneel before the God King Trump. TFG is too stupid to be as evil as the Nazis but his followers are zealots who would go down that path eagerly all the while thinking they are the righteous ones. Without so much as a stray thought about the evil they are doing.
Justice matters.
(6,929 posts)In all due respect, Newt can call for jailing the J6 investigators all he wants, there are no crimes there: They're just doing their job granted to them by the Constitution. Judges would laugh out all cases brought before them and toss them away. No probable causes for any Grand Jury subpoena to look at there at all.
If Rs retake Congress, they don't have 67 Senators to convict and remove President Biden on any phony impeachments cooked by the House, so the White House is secured with veto powers for any batshit crazy bill coming from them landing on his desk.

(5,310 posts)Of course, few of us at DU can agree with much of anything he stands for. I know I sure don't. He's a Republican after all. He stands for what used to be Republican ideas, principles, and policies.
But he's shown many times before, he's an honest man who won't comprise his core beliefs for the crazy whims of his party.
I admire him for that, even though I hate almost every other thing he stands for. The country could use a lot more Republicans like Mitt Romney. We'd still fight about what direction the country should go, but at least we could get back to honestly debating things like we used to.

from Wikipedia:
I doubt she'd gamble for the WH, since the forever sexist GOP would primary her out no matter her 93% vote record with Trump.
Seriously, I didn't say what condition her soul's in, but at least this neocon ready to fight the autocratic fascist leanings of the trumpcult.
She's a party remnant. She, Kinzinger and maybe Romney can be the start of a new GOP if that's possible.

(8,200 posts)I may be very wrong, I hope not, that this trying time will be suffocated by its own insanity. It is somewhat analogous to the "Red Scare" that gripped the nation following WWII. It was produced a very similar cast of demagogues led by McCarthy who was eventually discredited and whose name lives on in perpetual disgrace. Many were falsely accused, and their careers destroyed by extremists. We must resist and awaken from apathy to forcefully speak out in protection of our Constitution that is under attack by the fascists lust for power.
