(17,022 posts)Have any other giant boats been built in that place by the company making this boat? In other words, has that bridge been disassembled other times? Just curious.
I saw that Prime membership is going up again this year. Not crazy about paying so jeff can buy a boat, or even to wipe rotten eggs off it. Prime to be just like my cable company. Costs just keeps going up, with no corresponding change in service.
piddyprints
(14,648 posts)there is a change in service. It's worse than it has ever been. Prime shipping means nothing. You don't necessarily get it in 2 days. The new rule is that it will arrive 2 days after it is shipped, which could be anytime at all. If it's not there on time? Too bad.
Just a few years ago, if something didn't arrive in 2 days, they'd extend a free month onto the Prime membership or put $5-10 in your account. Now you're just out of luck and paying more for the insult. Customer service is harder to reach, etc., etc.
Oh, and now there are very much fewer things to watch without subscribing to a "trial membership" of something. If you do find something, you get to watch some commercials before your movie starts. So, yeah, the service has changed.
I still can't believe they'd do that to the bridge. Should disassemble the yacht.

(17,022 posts)occasionally watch something, if I have company. I got rid of cable tv almost 3 years ago, and as far as I'm concerned, any of the services for sale are showing reruns that were reruns when I had cable.
I noticed the shipping is all over the place. I get a message it'll be delivered on a day, and it is usually here early. I have gotten a couple orders cancelled. Some of the customer service is bad now, too. I'll keep using it until it is safe to go back to stores.
Thanks for detailing the changes you've seen.

(14,648 posts)We have no TV at all and watch reruns on Netflix and Hulu for the most part. But sometimes we venture into Prime and it's surprising how bad it has become.
There aren't many choices around here, even without Covid. So we have to do a lot of mail order. Lately, I've been shopping from Etsy stores and have found some great items and bargains. I don't mind supporting them. I'm trying hard to find alternatives to Amazon.
I think we're all seeing the same things.

(768 posts)The company building the boat is paying for the disassembly / reassembly. So ultimately Bezos is paying for that. The bridge had been disassembled recently for restoration.
Still it's a slap in the face and illustrates what a jackass Bezos is.

(17,022 posts)so I don't like him or hate him. I don't like the policies. I think when you are the 3rd richest person in the world, ($165.5 billion), maybe you have enough and should put tthe brakes on. It is a reflection on character of the rich that if they want a bridge moved, they can have a bridge moved.
But I think that the oligarches are playing chess with us. They want to be the richest and take home all the marbles, and collecting even more from the other 99% is like getting a free roll of the dice.

(8,059 posts)wouldn't it be easier to figure out a way to telescope, disassemble, or somehow lower the masts to get under the bridge (an engineering/builder/Bezos problem) rather than taking apart the bridge (an entire city's problem)? Or is that just impossible? I don't really know how masts are constructed. On edit--anyway, his arrogance in making Rotterdam accommodate his whims will earn him the stinky eggs.

(22,397 posts)Do you think any national government could do something like that?
Who do you think is really in charge here?
Who is the master and who is the servant?
Even if he's paying for it expecting people to dismantle a part of their heritage for a billionaire can get his yacht under it is just symbolic of this oligarchic world that we are all just forced to put up with. Take a stand. Make them lower the masts and leave the bridge alone.

(13,195 posts)The article says, "After the bridge was renovated in 2017, the city vowed it wouldn't be taken apart again..."
The word "again" makes it sound like it was taken apart before for some reason. And Bezos is buying a $500M yacht from the Dutch, so I'm thinking quite a few of them like him. These egg throwing "residents" might be just a bunch of envious yahoos who resent Bezos for his wealth.

ours would be a much better world today. For instance, his thinking on economic inequality:
If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.
-- Inaugural Address of John F. Kennedy, Friday, January 20, 1961
So, in the short time he had, President Kennedy did what he could to balance the interests of concentrated wealth with the interests of the average American -- necessary for the good of the country.
Professor Donald Gibson detailed the issues in his 1994 book, Battling Wall Street: The Kennedy Presidency.
From the book:
"What (J.F.K. tried) to do with everything from global investment patterns to tax breaks for individuals was to re-shape laws and policies so that the power of property and the search for profit would not end up destroying rather than creating economic prosperity for the country."
-- Donald Gibson, Battling Wall Street. The Kennedy Presidency
More on the book, by two great Americans:
"Gibson captures what I believe to be the most essential and enduring aspect of the Kennedy presidency. He not only sets the historical record straight, but his work speaks volumes against today's burgeoning cynicism and in support of the vision, ideal, and practical reality embodied in the presidency of John F. Kennedy - that every one of us can make a difference." -- Rep. Henry B. Gonzalez, Chair, House Committee on Banking, Finance, and Urban Affairs
"Professor Gibson has written a unique and important book. It is undoubtedly the most complete and profound analysis of the economic policies of President Kennedy. From here on in, anyone who states that Kennedy was timid or status quo or traditional in that field will immediately reveal himself ignorant of Battling Wall Street. It is that convincing." -- James DiEugenio, author, Destiny Betrayed. JFK, Cuba, and the Garrison Case --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
Based on my experience, I think itd be more a world where everyone gets a chance to be wealthy.

JustABozoOnThisBus
(23,367 posts)There must be a good financial case for disassembling and reassembling a bridge. It's hard to believe that's cheaper than your suggestion, but it must be so.
If it was my yacht, they might need to widen the channel. It would have to be big enough for two oars.
Warpy
(111,342 posts)although "stepping up" doesn't quite cover it, they'd need a crane. My guess is that the bridge dismantle will be so expensive, even if they do get a permit that the boat builder will have to remove the mast(s) to get it out of the harbor.
The builder really should have considered this stuff before the thing got off the drawing board.
Still, it's kind of neat that Bezos's superyacht isn't the standard, diesel driven floating hotel. It's a schooner and will most likely do most of its traveling under sail.

(10,885 posts)their beloved bridge, BUT there's also a whole lotta' ($500M) American dollars being poured into their economy by Bezos. How many Dutch families are being supported by the wages earned building that yacht? There are yacht builders around the world. Bezos could have chosen any other nation to enrich with his purchase. There should be some gratitude for that.
I'll bet none of the Oceanco employees will be chucking those eggs.
A lot of Dutch earned some good money building it and are probably proud of their work.
Further, the 21% sales tax generated a considerable amount to be used for the public's interest, like maintaining bridges, for example.

(9,436 posts)he can have a bridge disassembled to fit a fucking yacht under it. Must be nice to have so much fucking money that you can buy a local government and think nothing of it just like he buys other politicians so he can pay as little taxes as he can. You might not think so, but with the wealth inequality in the US and throughout the world, this just pisses people off. His priority is his yacht and getting it out to sea. He doesn't give a shit about anyone else.
This says so much about our priorities. If you have the money, you can do whatever you want. If you don't, suck it up and you can pull your boot straps up and be just like Bezos.

(3,014 posts)It was originally part of of a rail line that was shut down back in 1993. The bridge itself was never converted from a rail-bridge, it's just been standing as a freely rusting monument.
The bridge was also supposed to be scrapped then, because the local government wasn't exactly keen on wasting money to maintain a bridge that would no longer be used. But, due to public outrage, they decided to designate it as a monument.
Honestly? If they can wring a few years worth funding to cover the bridge to nowheres maintenance costs out of Bezos, that'd be great for Rotterdam.
Edit - Now that I think about it, I suspect one of the big fears that people are having about Bezos wanting the bridge temporarily disassembled is that their local government might decide to not actually put the bridge back together again.
