Their laity doesn’t want to hear about “turn the other cheek” or “do unto others”, they just want to hear about the righteousness of wealth and how god wants them to kill their enemies. To them the values that Jesus teaches are a noble fiction, a fantasy like Batman or Lord of the Rings. Nobody really lives that way, as far as they’re concerned, and it would be stupid and naive to try. So they mock any higher intentions and the idea of the common good. From their perspective it’s all just posturing and hypocrisy.

Hundred years ago Martin Luther famously nailed his letter of grievances over “indulgence’s” and other practices the church was involved in to the door of the church. Historians point to this event as the start of the Protestant Reformation…

Do whatever you want as long as you make a big show of your holiness once in a while so everybody can see that you're a holy roller with God on your side who can do whatever you want because you have God's blessing. Enjoy.
