CNNHogan made the announcement at the end of a press conference Tuesday, noting that he appreciates "the people who have been encouraging me to consider it."
"But as I have repeatedly said, I don't aspire to be a senator, and that fact has not changed," Hogan said.
The moderate Republican was first elected governor of Maryland in 2014 and was reelected four years later by more than 10 points. Hogan's success in the heavily Democratic state, plus the perceived weakness of the incumbent Democratic senator, Chris Van Hollen, prompted repeated overtures by GOP leaders to get the governor to run for Senate this year.

(8,679 posts)I mostly liked his matter of fact, honest approach to governing. Also I love it when he makes anti-Trump comments. The other issue was our candidate, Ben Jealous. I thought he was too far left. I consider myself a liberal but Ben just did not connect with me. The other factor was how hard Hogan pushed for the Purple Line light rail project. The Purple Line had been stalled for many years due to all sorts or political, legal, and financial issues. Hogan made it happen.
However, that said, I would not vote for him against Joe Biden if he were the candidate in 2024.
