(3,509 posts)These racists and white supremacists play on the fears of those cowards. They play on their fear of being a minority (white percentage of the population is dropping) and that as a minority they will be treated as they treated other minorities. They play on their fear of change. They play on their fears of people who don't look like they do.
In the end these racists being supported by corporations like FOX and Spotify and whoever employed Donald Trump are playing on the fears of the cowardly conservatives to create more racists like themselves.

(1,364 posts)This knowledge has shaken me to the core and has changed my outlook and opinion of people that I used to look up to and cherish which "were" my family and friends. These friends and family members are now "acquaintances".

(11,744 posts)White Supremacy is baked into the culture of the United States. Every single one of us has gotten messages in media and culture. We are primed to accept ideas related to the idea that Whites are better then "others". That makes people vulnerable to hearing and accepting the ideas that Rogan and Carlson push. Especially during times when there are other anxieties.
You can be a racist AND be a victim as well.
Elie is right that without an audience, people like Rogan, Carlson, and Trump are just cranks. However, what I think it isn't as simple as saying that the audiences are all just virulent racists who went looking for the information.
There are a number of very good videos on You Tube about people "falling down the rabbit hole". Also the documentary, "The Brainwashing of My Dad" shows a process by which people who are liberal, have fallen in with people like Limbaugh.
There are certainly a lot of racists who were racists before viewing and are just getting their fill. There are also a lot of people who absolutely have been drawn into this culture, who did not have any overtly racist attitudes but as I said, are a product of our society that sends both subtle and overt White Supremacy messages that we are all exposed to.
We definitely need to have a very long overdue conversation about White Supremacy within our system.
