FedEx put a Black driver on unpaid leave after two white men chased and shot at him, according to his lawyer
FedEx put a Black driver was put on unpaid leave because he was too anxious to continue delivering packages on his route after two white men chased him through their neighborhood and shot at him while he was making a delivery, his attorney said.
Brandon Case has been charged with aggravated assault and his father Gregory Case has been charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated assault in connection with the shooting in Brookhaven, Mississippi, according to the Brookhaven Police Department. Attorney's for D'Monterrio Gibson, a Black FedEx driver, said that last month, the two men chased Gibson and shot at him while he was delivering FedEx packages at a news conference on Thursday.
Gibson told reporters that he believed the shooting was racially motivated.
"After they actually fired the initial shots they proceeded to chase me to the highway," Gibson said. "So like you failed to kill me the first time you still chasing me. It was some dark stuff."

Sheesh. How tone deaf can they be?

This isn't going to play out well for FedEx.

(20,585 posts)It is my understanding that Fedex sells the routes to individuals so the owner of D'Monterrio's route needs to be questioned over this. I wonder if Fedex even has minimum employee protections and guidance for an incident like this.

(8,588 posts)They're beginning to require their Ground contractor/route owners to own several routes, not just one.
Fed Ex Express and Fed Ex Freight are corporate owned and operated.
If this guy was a Ground driver, then the Fed Ex Corp is in the clear and he will have to go after the contractor. If he's with Express, then Fred Smith better get ready to pay up bc it sounds like this driver has a really good case. I hope he is with Express.

(3,256 posts)They all work for Fed EX subcontractors. This is why I don't do business with Fed EX. This is so because they don't have to pay wages and benefits like they do to their over the road drivers. They are just a shithole scab company in my estimation. UPS tried the sane thing years back and it was a big flop. Not enough people fell for the low wage "independent operator" routine.

(488 posts)The employee has to fight to have the company do the right thing every time.
The company should have recognized the severity of the incident from the beginning. I hope that they get sued to within a inch of making a profit for the year thats the only way this is going to change their behavior. leave without pay unbelievable !

(14,585 posts)FedEx PROFITS are up 18% over last year, with a 2021 net income of $1.23 BILLION...
AND...
FedEx CEO Fred Smith 'earned' $11.13 MILLION in compensation.
Just knowing that makes me feel whole lots better! Those employees don't matter - FedEx needs to keep those profits comin' for their SHAREHOLDERS.
That's how it is here in 'Murika, don't cha know! Employees can go hungry because they don't make enough (Kroger), pee in bottles because they don't get long enough breaks and the restrooms are too far away from their workstations (Amazon), or be put on unpaid leave because Kluxers take potshots at them for working while being black (FedEx).
Gosh, what could be better than this capitalist utopia that is 'Murika?
