Kansas principal ordered to apologize for showing a video about white privilege after teacher said it created a hostile work environment

A Wichita, Kansas, principal was ordered to apologize after showing a video about racism and white privilege to his staff, KMUW reported.

Tim Hamblin of Derby High School showed his staff the video last month, KMUW reported.

The four-minute video showed the Black author and academic Joy DeGruy relating an incident that showed how white privilege can be leveraged positively in solidarity with people of color.

In the video, DeGruy told a story of how she and her sister-in-law, who is white-passing, were treated markedly differently when paying at the grocery store.

WICHITA, Kansas — A Kansas high school principal was forced to apologize for showing a video about white privilege during an employee meeting.

Tim Hamblin, principal at Derby High School, shared a four-minute video during a staff in-service day last month that featured Black author Joy DeGruy. In it, the author relates a story about being treated differently at a store because of her race, and how a lighter-skinned family member spoke up for her.

“She used her white privilege to educate and make right a situation that was wrong,” DeGruy says in the 2011 video. “That’s what you can do every single day.”

Members of the Derby High girls basketball team were shown the same video in response to race-based comments made toward some team members on social media late last year.

I apologize for the many, many stupid people in this state. We have been trying for decades to change things, but as you see, it goes generationally slow. (sigh)

Just yesterday, I learned my former city of KcK, one of the last vestiges where D's actually had a (local) voice has been completely diluted, once again... this time into obsolescence. This, not only to silence the D's voices there, but also to get rid of Sharice Davids. A year ago, my new city, Leavenworth, did the same thing to us here. Now we no longer have the ease of walking across the street to vote, we have to drive halfway across the city to vote in a church over there.

One of these days my old crazy self is gonna come out and I'm gonna to fall to the ground in a make-Linda Blair-proud moment scene about going into a church to vote.
