Fitness influencer, 31, is 'working on recovery' after being placed on a ventilator

Her story is pretty damn inspirational, and I've never read anything about her being vocally anti-vax, so I'm not going to talk any smack on this one. Heck, might not even be C19 (though seems possible).

Get well soon Lexi!!!

Lexi Reed, a fitness influencer, is beginning the road to recovery after being placed on a ventilator during an unnamed illness.

The influencer, 31, gained Instagram fame in 2016 as she documented an intense weight-loss journey. She lost 312 pounds, alongside her husband Danny Reed, who lost 95 pounds.

Now, though, she is hospitalized and unable to walk, according to a post by her husband.

"A few weeks ago Lexi kept getting sick and couldn't keep any food down," Reed wrote on his wife's Instagram account. "She then started acting differently so I took her to the hospital where they admitted her into ICU, placed on a medically induced coma, on a ventilator, and (told) me that her organs started failing."

This woman's story is actually quite inspirational, and she has been through a lot.

Pic included is maybe not for the squeamish ...

Sounds like it could be hyponatremia.
Disruption of the GI.
Organs failing.
After a huge weight loss that likely included massive water loss.
My wife had this & while it didn't go this far, she got within 10ppm of the LD5O (lo) for blood sodium.
She was hospitalized 4 days, but they were pumping her full of saline so sodium quit dropping. It just wouldn't go up.
I traced it to a side effect of a new psych med she was on.
Here's the kicker: When i told the GP & psych doctor she needed off that med NOW, & it worked, the psych told her "You're lucky you married a scientist." We got my wife a new doctor after that.

Which, seriously, good for her.

As for why it's on Today. The show gets social media eyeballs, and the couple has a Go Fund Me because they don't have health insurance.

So, human interest fundraising. "She worked so hard, and now this happened." Which, yeah. That is shitty.

Losing 300+ pounds in 18 months is not an inspiration, it's a recipe for disaster. She's also gained a lot of weight back -- which is what happens to the vast majority of people who lose 10% of their body weight. Is that still inspiring? I'm not being snarky; I genuinely want to know.

They don't have health insurance because Lexi said she "didn't need it" after making hundreds of thousands of dollars as a weight-loss influencer.

But now I see what you were originally getting at.

I did wonder why that ventilator pic was so very different from the IG stuff. So there's that.

I agree with you 300 lbs in 18 months is going to cause a lot of potential problems. Then gaining a bunch back. Body chemistry would be a mess, and you'd have to be doing some extreme things that wouldn't last long term.

I'm not a fan of a lot of fitness "influencers" because of this stuff. A lot of unhealthy behavior gets promoted for clicks (or its horrifying opposite like Nikocado, who will likely be dead soon). I gained some weight during Covid. Ended up at home at my desk all day, gyms were closed, and I didn't realize it til my clothes were getting tight ("No, it's not me. It's the jeans who are wrong." ). I just switched to low carb, walking/hiking/biking, and gym again once they reopened. I drew it out from June to December rather than go nuts about it and try to "fix" everything. Not healthy.

Sad for them. Sometimes addictions get shifted. Maybe the social media attention became addictive (and the money), and she resorted to more extreme measures to keep the good times going. Hard to say.

But yeah, I get you. And looking a bit more into it, I'm inclined to agree. It's not inspirational if someone is harming themselves for clicks.

She documented the whole process on Instagram.

Maybe you're lucky enough that weight-loss has never been needed, or you easily inspire yourself to do so when needed. Not everyone is like that

Looks like she gained a bunch of weight back. I am not judging that only wondering if it completely threw the balance of her stomach off going back and forth.

A lot of the new lifestyle diets have you going completely off all sugar flour then if you binge on processed food and sugar after your body is clean of it its got to muck it up.
