U.S. track and field star ShaCarri Richardson questioned why a Russian figure skater was allowed to compete after a failed drug test and she had to sit out after her own drug test for marijuana came back positive.
Richardson responded to a USA TODAY article by Christine Brennan, in which she said that the Court of Arbitration for Sport's decision to allow Kamila Valieva, who tested positive for the heart drug trimetazidine, to compete in the women's figure skating competition at the 2022 Beijing Games "is just a slap in the face to all of those athletes doing it the right way,
The Russian Olympic Committee won gold in the team event last week, and the International Olympic Committee said there would be no medal ceremony.
The court said Valieva, who is 15 years old, is a protected person and therefore has different rules than adult athletes.
"Different rules" indeed.
I supported Sha' Carri's suspension on the basis of 'she knew the rules'. Kamila also 'knew the rules' if she took it voluntarily; if it was given without her knowledge her coach, or whomever, 'knew the rules'. The list of banned substances is not a secret and if Kamila had a legitimate need to have a prescription for a medication on the list the IOC should have been informed before competition or a positive test.
To suspend one but not the other is a double standard and makes mockery of the anti-doping rules. It also smacks of racism.

(44,974 posts)Marijuana is illegal, whether it's a performance enhancing drug or not. An original rumor was that Russian figure skater tested positive for marijuana. I didn't see a lot of people here arguing how harmless marijuana is and how no big deal it is when it came to a Russian figure skater.

I have no problem with anyone smoking weed as its not a performance-enhancing substance. That being said, right now its a banned substance. Both athletes should not be allowed to compete.

(2,304 posts)The ROC should not be allowed to compete...period. They have engaged in systemic cheating for years.
But -- they are allowed to compete. With the IOC always suspect corruption and yu will be correct 95% of the time.
The US bribe for Richardson was not sufficient to overlook her positive test. Because we do not engage in nation sponsored bribes of IOC officials and call out those bribes as illegal, further pissing off the officials who take the bribes and make the decisions.
The russian bribes are sufficient to overlook ALL positive tests and ALL the previous cheating. This coach was implicated in the past. She should not allowed to be around any athlete in international competition.
They are using the age of the participant to hide behind , but the reality is that they are hiding behind big piles of money that have poured in from Russia for years.
