Police launch internal affairs investigation into baby injured in Pensacola Police custody

This article is hard to follow as written because it's TV news text, so here's the background from a Twitter thread from Jasmyne Cannick:

So a father was asleep at home with his two kids, 1 & 3, when the police bust in the door around 4:30 a.m. Dad fires one shot at the door because he wakes up and just sees a guy in his house. Realizes after he shoots that it's a cop and puts the gun down.

With hands up, the dad is apologizing profusely. The cops apparently had a warrant but it wasn't for the dad. It was for computer equipment that belonged to someone else. They charge the dad with attempted murder on a police officer.

In the process, the police take the kids and drop the 1 y/o causing severe trauma to the baby's head. They tried to cover it up. Didn't tell the dad that they dropped his kid. Prevented EMS from taking the kid to the hospital.

When the kids were finally given back, the baby was unrecognizable. The mom took the baby to the hospital where he was finally given emergency care.

Dad is still charged with attempted murder.

CPENSACOLA, Fla. -- The Pensacola Police Department says it has launched an internal affairs investigation after parents say a child was hurt while in police custody following last week's police-involved shooting.

It happened after Pensacola Police SWAT officers executed a search warrant last Thursday morning at a home on N 7th Ave.

(snip)

The department claims both kids were in the backseat of a car with an investigator. The investigator got out of the car.

Upon returning, Pensacola Police says the investigator didn't notice the child leaning on the door. When the investigator opened it, police say the child fell out of the car.

And without securing the children in any way?

I hope the child did not get brain damage from the police negligence. Perhaps the police should make a deal - drop the charges against the father in return for not having to pay for the injury to the child. - so long as those injuries did not cause permanent damage.

They shouldn't get a do over. The only question is how loudly did they announce themselves prior to forced entry and for how long.

Also WTF does it have to be at 4:30 am? They are just setting up people to get hurt or killed.

It better show them beating on the door loudly and announcing themselves for five minutes before making a forced entry.

Also in those cases of warrant verification the occupants should be instructed to call 911 to verify that it is a valid warrant prior to entry.

No more of this breaking into the house in the middle of the night.

It’s not the father who should have been charged with attempted murder, but the cop who used deadly force on an infant, and then refused emergency medical assistance. If the kid survives, from the description, there could be permanent damage to its brain or other vitals. The city of Pensacola should be allocating for a $20 million judgment against them, and they’d be getting off light.

Was it resisting arrest?

This no-knock warrant crap has to stop. If I had unidentified people busting down my door at 4:30 in the morning, I'd be shooting too.

The cops are charging him with attd murder for intimidation
purposes so that he won't sue the Pensacola PD.

Just look at the mall fight video where a white high schooler got to sit down while the black junior high kid (two years younger) had the knee to the back and handcuff treatment.
