(2,636 posts)There are no federal mandates about Covid, except for federal employees.
Cities, counties, school districts, businesses set standards because there was no guidance from TDFG's white house.
He'd propose pulling federal dollars from public school over climate change, or the next Texas grid failure, or because it's Ash Wednesday, and he wants to see schools burn down. His ideal citizen is some tool like Cawthorn.
All homeschooled. No day care, so mom's stay home. Add to this Texas abortion bounty hunting, and all I can say is phuck all the way off, CancunCruz.

(2,636 posts)Privately run for profit "public" schools.
I worked at two charters. Pretty clear the school is choosing the kids. Sure, they're open to all, but the walk and talk chat as the admins suss out the kid, why they're leaving, and whether they're a good fit. While not all students were white, most were, more so than the schools they came from in the surrounding counties. Charters in NC paid on the state teachers salary schedule, without local stipends.
The School was a Classical Academy (high school taught Latin), but the parents were divided. Many thought the C in LLCA was for "Christian."
so, this happened.

The English Department walked out en masse.
I liked the school well enough, I liked my kids,

The Board ended all clubs on campus, every one, rather than let the high school students form a Gay Straight Alliance. The English Department walked out en masse. I heard about it on NPR, and applied.
They've been on a propaganda train since Reagan and he back to basics movement, then the magnet schools and open enrollment across district, then charter schools. Schools are failing is all we've heard. Despite numbers that said otherwise.
Free public education for all is what leads to people like Barack Obama, Kamela Harris, and all three of Biden's SCOTUS candidates. Education makes people more liberal.
Public Schools, Public libraries, public hospitals, public spaces are vital to democracy. We own these institutions, not private for profit companies.

(7,206 posts)institutions then only those who can afford to pay will be educated. Of course, that may be the plan.

If they can break the teachers unions....
The Postal Service is ours, too. Fed Ex and UPS would love to replace snail mail. Privatize that, and out of the way places and rural areas will suffer.
We need government because Private Everything means they do not go where they cannot make a profit.
The republican party and the "conservatives" have been trying to tear down the New Deal for almost 100 Years now, with the same tired scripts. Their progeny is now of age, and they want to undo the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts while they're at it.
The evangelicals don't want their little white angels to be near "any of those brown park dwellers," so we've got Charters and Christian schools pumping out semi-literate boobs like Cawthorn who've only been taught a very narrow "worldview." They lost on school segregation in the 70s, and they're at it again.
They don't want their own schools so much as their doctrine delivered to all kids in all schools. By all means, we should let the D+ back of the class ex-linebacker on the football team who never read anything but the cliffs notes and his lovely wife who owns a hair salon should decide what kids read and how much history they can explore.
The attacks on curriculum come from the very same parents who do not come to back to school night or open house, and say "Well, he is 15. I can't really tell him what to do."
But the pool of money dedicated to education at the federal and state levels is far too large for Corporate America not to wet its beak.
Thom Hartmann talked years ago about the Commons--the public sphere that's disappearing.
The very things that made America great, they hate and want to destroy or make a buck from. I never used to hate them, but i'm awful close.

(19,253 posts)There's nothing different between COVID, measles, mumps, whooping cough or polio vaccine requirements for attending school.
If you're against Covid shots for kids but not polio or tetanus, explain WHY. Or, STFU.
