I just caught his concession-farewell speech and he said that the young competitors have surpassed him. What were the moves that they did during the competition that went beyond Shaun's abilities?

(182,884 posts)The Japanese team was really strong. All the me s halfpipe skiers are under 25. There was a female free skier who is 32 and thats way out of the norm.

(9,999 posts)That's Shaun White's sport. Freestyle skiing is a whole other thing. Shaun did get some medals this time around, which I consider quite an achievement in a sport where anyone 25 or older is considered an "old guy".
We watched some freestyle skiing last night, I forget which designation. At one point my husband just shook his head and said, "These guys are crazy," to which I replied, "No, they're just mostly teenagers." That was the case, actually.

(4,994 posts)The Japanese snowboarders were doing successions of tricks that the commentators said were beyond anything ever done. They were flying! High!! Shaun may have medaled if he hadn't had a glitch in his final run, but he came in fourth overall - not a small feat for a 35 year-old in competition with some competitors who were barely yet born when Shaun was in his golden years.
