Whatever delusions the GOP held about Trump when he was elected were surely gone by the time of his first impeachment trial. By then you knew that he was a lying, corrupt, out-of-control criminal whose behaviour was not only detrimental to the country, but a liability to your party.
I realize that the former was of no concern to you, but thought at least the latter would have been.
You could have rid yourself of the Orange menace then and there by voting to convict. But you chose to persist in defending his actions - actions you knew were illegal, and demonstrated that your "pResident" was a loose cannon who had no regard for the survival of your party, and even less regard for the welfare of a nation.
Perhaps you adopted the perennially-concerned Susan Collins' position that Trump had "learned his lesson", and would rein-in his demons and walk the straight-and-narrow for the remainder of his term in office.
But that didn't happen, and you were handed that rarest of things - a second chance. A second chance to correct your mistakes, a second chance to declare that in inciting and orchestrating an insurrection against the US government and democracy itself, your "pResident" had gone too far and should be removed from office.
It seemed so obvious, so in-your-face apparent, that finally declaring that enough was enough was the GOP's last hope of retaining any credibility as a political force was to vote to convict in a second impeachment trial. But instead, you chose to stand by your man, and pretend that the events of January 6th simply never happened.
So where are you now, Republicans? You are left holding the bag. You are left still defending a man who is being exposed as what he's always been - and what you've always known him to be: a grifter whose wealth is a fabrication, whose business savvy is being revealed as complete fiction, whose financial transactions are being proven to be nothing more than a smoke-and-mirrors attempt to avoid prosecution.
Despite the seriousness of pending charges, I cannot help but be amused by your party's futile attempts to portray Trump as an innocent victim of politically-motivated investigations into his crimes - as though those damned Democrats 'n' Liberals put a gun to his head and forced him to falsify his tax returns and financial statements.
You are where you are, Republicans, because you blew TWO chances to kick your beloved "pResident" to the curb.
Actions have consequences - and you're about to understand what those consequences are.
BTW, good luck in 2024. I'm sure that your defense of a by-then-indicted former "pResident" will serve you well in convincing American voters just how dedicated your party is to upholding the Constitution and the rule of law.

(43,297 posts)Some convictions might help. Joe with his sheer competence might help. Seems to me Dem Gov's and Senators might do more. But you know there are still those anti-Joe yard signs as well as Jesus is my Saviour, Trump is my President goons and loons.

(448 posts)To pull out those stupid Trump signs awhile back. I got one the other day in my parents neighborhood a few days ago. Civil disobedience used to be a tradition for our side. Maybe it needs to be more widespread again.

I'm thinking of the saying that you can't reason a person out of something they weren't reasoned into. The wobbly middle that sometimes votes tRump is susceptible to emotions. (Of course, the emotional base of deplorables is a lost cause.)

(63,221 posts)They cheat. They always have and always will. Now more than ever. It is the ONLY way they can win and they know it. And they will do it. I am not so sure we have the votes to overcome it.

(10,082 posts)Some votes will not be counted, especially mail ballots that are easier to reject for specious reasons. Already Texas is rejecting 30 to 50% of registrations to vote because theyve changed the forms to make it easier to miss a number required or to put it in the wrong place. They know that the majority of new voters are more likely to be Democrats, so if they keep more from even registering, that benefits them. Applications for mail ballots are also being rejected for the same reasons. I believe Democratic voters would do well to vote in person in states like Texas where the rules have changed drastically.

(22,270 posts)However the applications instructed voters to send to the TX Sec State office, not the county board of elections.
This means a delay in getting the ballots back to the voters!
I do not know what he was thinking!
NOw I did hear that those went to blue counties and the idea was to make their applications late in arriving at the county headquarters.

(3,403 posts)if he won. I said, it is simple "Actions have consequences, and trump has always been shielded from consequences, he doesn't understand about consequences, and he doesn't care."
Not understanding that simple fact of "Actions have Consequences" is a common attribute of criminals, that is why they are criminals.

(3,503 posts)So how does Тяцмр being exposed hurt the Republicans? Its doing nothing but help them as I see it. And Democrats not coming out for midterms because they arent getting everything they want instantly just gives the country over to the fascists.
We need some wins and we cant seem to get them because of two assholes. People dont see it that way, they just blame the whole party for doing nothing. They see the higher prices for everything and blame the party in power. This is not a very bright country and I think were in big trouble.

If they had, their own political and social fortunes would have been under fire. Regardless of how disgusting that orange gibbon is, he is just one piece of the puzzle that our money-worshipping nation has created. The rest know they could end up in the same boat... thence their silence and/or denial.

More is to come...just hope it comes out before the midterms, so that Dems have fire power to fight these corrupt, lying repukes during the elections.

(5,436 posts)They saw TFG as their path to endless and permanent power and wealth - of the non-political variety.
A dictatorship with TFG at the helm and they as yes men carrying out his bidding appealed to them.
With that avenue pretty much gone, half of them still believe, somehow, it will still happen.
They just need to imagine real hard, squint their eyes, tilt their heads just so, use the right words, rewrite slabs of recent history, and it will happen.
The rest are just confused and wondering where they went wrong. Or more to the point, who made them go wrong.
Logic like the legal requirements of the job, the values of the Constitution, past political events, just don't come into it.
But I guess confused and delusional are trade marks for the Republican party.
In some ways the Republican party isn't a political party. In many ways, in fact.
