Coming Out of the Pandemic, Some of Us Faster Than Others (and That's Okay)
snip//
We could have done something about our ongoing horror of a health care system and poured funding into nursing training and salaries and more on a permanent basis, not just as crisis pay. We already had a shortage of health care workers, especially nurses, and now it's a full-blown crisis on top of the crisis of the pandemic. We could have said, "You know what? It's just motherfucking dumb to not have a national health care system. People shouldn't be afraid of their co-pays so they don't go to the doctor and spread the sick around." We could make mental health care far more widely available for all the trauma everyone has suffered. We still get more than 4 rapid tests to households. There are all kinds of things we could do so that everyone could participate in the world again with some amount of caution, sure, but still able to do so.
A nation that really gave a shit as a whole would have passed a Covid tax on the wealthy to help get us the fuck out of the crisis. We are not that nation.
The nation is still ridiculously bifurcated between the places with high vaccination rates and places with low ones. The reason we have 2500-3000 people a day still dying of Covid is because the corpses are piled up in Unvaxxed America. It'll be a while before those numbers decline, as well as the numbers in hospitals (which will also be playing catch up with all the surgeries and other things that were put off because of the Omicron and Delta surges).
But as the nation opens up, even in the unvaccinated places, the people to thank are the vaccinated and the masked. If you're unvaccinated and all of a sudden vaccination card checks go away so you can go back to Chili's again, thank all your vaccinated friends and family and everyone else. It's because enough of us did what we're supposed to do and weren't selfish twatfleas about it like you that you can get your baby back ribs again. It wasn't ivermectin or piss-drinking that got us to where we are. It's because a bunch of us are responsible goddamn people. You're welcome, you pathetic fucks.
(Note: I'm sure some of you will get all pissy about my relatively relaxed attitude towards getting out in the world. But I respect your fear of the virus. I respect your limitations. Mine are just different.)
(Note 2: Obviously, you could respond that "It's not over" and you're right. But it kind of is for a lot of people. We just have to not be cavalier about things, like back in April of last year when everyone went fucking crazy and having orgies in the streets.)

(12,330 posts)Apparently Omicron from South Africa at this point in time kicked Delta's arse and was so infectious that it diluted itself alongwith BA.2. That the vaccinations, boosters, and masks contributed to this. Blue states have a much higher percentage of vaccinations, boosters, and wearing masks and it is them that helped corner Sars 2 Covid. Mandates were protection for the general public. Freedom to live virus free or in this matter endemic (living with a much weaker virus) is obtainable and I am glad that California has reach that conclusion.
Whenever a freedom from mandates person confronts me about pandemic, I tell them I owe so much from the people who cared enough to protect themselves and others.

(19,114 posts)We're able to be in a much better spot because of all of the people that vaccinated, social distanced, and masked. And that's virtually everyone on this site, so thank you DUers!
Because the majority of the population gives a crap about others, we are able to move into a phase where masks and mandates might not be needed anymore.

while their rich politicians, donors, and fake news persons are fully vaccinated, boosted and wear masks. Governors that send their children to private schools that has a "mandate" for masks and yet spout about freedumbs from mandates. Even the GQP judges and UC SC are fully vaccinated, boosted and wear masks.
But hey, at this point in time they are the ones suffering and dying from Sars 2 Covid. The logic is mind blowing, and yet I figure that are owning the Libs.

(63,221 posts)I just got a bill for $800 for a routine colonoscopy. I am calling them up and telling them I am not paying it. What is my insurance for? F**k them.

(171,092 posts)Nothing was agreed to due to their altruism. Insurance companies got paid, bet on it.
As for your colonoscopy, what does your policy indicate? I know when I have any kind of what is deemed surgery, it's $400 out of pocket until I meet my deductible. This is Medicare Advantage.

(63,221 posts)And why are you sticking up for insurance companies? This is something that should be covered 100%. You are the type of person that is responsible for allowing them to get away with the shit that they do. Oh, so they don't rob us completely, so the tiny amount that they do is acceptable, right?
babylonsister
(171,092 posts)I'm being realistic, not 'sticking up for insurance companies'.
And it's my fault they get away with the shit they do?? You need to check yourself, missy. I added my situation to the discussion; don't tar me with your anger.

(63,221 posts)It was wrong of me and I hope you will accept my apology. I am just very angry at health insurance companies in particular and the fact that we are the only first world country that doesn't have universal healthcare.
I pay a LOT for my insurance and still get bills like this and it infuriates me. I know that isn't your fault at all, but we should never accept this as being ok.
Again, I am sorry and my anger was mis-directed. I wish you well.

(20,889 posts)Most liberals I know have long ago accepted the new normal, made behavioral changes, and have gotten on with their lives.
Meanwhile the few conservative friends I have still talk daily about the evils of the vaccine, masks, and all the things they can't do that literally liberals are doing daily.
I don't talk about vaccines daily like my conservative friends because I did that, it's over. I don't think about it anymore than the the childhood shots I got. I don't fret daily about masks because it's not that huge a burden. I'm too busy getting ready for little league to worry about truckers or protests. That's so 2020 of them. But we're over that. We've moved on.

(19,114 posts)The truckers are starting to protest in the US, what exactly are they protesting? Vaccine mandates got shot down by the SCOTUS. Mask mandates? Are they really afraid of masks?
One things for sure, now that the responsible people in the US did enough to get us past Covid for now, the Right will claim it was their temper tantrums that worked to end mask and vaccine requirements.
