Indianapolis Star: GOP looks to sidestep Richard Mourdock's controversial abortion comments

For Republicans in Indiana and nationally Thursday, GOP Senate nominee Richard Mourdock’s controversial abortion comments were the elephant in the room.

While his core supporters were energized, few Republican Party leaders wanted to talk about the issue in the final days before the election.

Mourdock, after having spent Wednesday explaining his comments, seemed only too happy to stop talking about the issue, telling a Kiwanis Club luncheon in Crawfordsville that he was “delighted” to not talk about politics. He didn’t bring up abortion, and neither did his audience.

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, at a campaign stop in Cincinnati, wasn’t talking about it either. Instead, he ignored questions from reporters about whether he will ask Mourdock’s campaign to take down the TV ad Romney taped endorsing him — the only ad Romney has done for any Senate candidate.
