Dan Patrick said he plans to propose ending all tenure for new hires at Texas public universities and revoking tenure for faculty who teach critical race theory, a framework of scholarship to study racism.
Patrick was responding to a resolution this week by the University of Texas Faculty Council to affirm academic freedom to teach about race, gender justice and critical race theory. He also suggested that tenure could be reviewed annually instead of every six years.
"Tenure, it's time that that comes to an end in Texas," Patrick said at a Friday news conference. "Right now, tenure is reviewed about every six years, and pretty much anything you do in those six years, there's nothing the university could do about it. They can't fire you."
Patrick, who presides over the Texas Senate, said he had spoken to members of boards of regents and university leaders across the state who believe tenure has outlived its time because they don't have control of the universities. He said he has the support of Sen. Brandon Creighton, R-Conroe, chair of the Senate Higher Education Committee, for his proposals.

During the press conference today, a reporter asked Texas Lt. Gov. @DanPatrick how he defines critical race theory.
Here's the partial transcript of @DanPatrick's answer:
A screenshot of black text on a white background that says "Critical race theory really came into prominence this year, as you know, (during) the (Texas legislative) session, or last year, ... but its been around for a long time. It's kind of an offshoot of critical legal studies, which is an offshoot of a socialist program (that says) that everything that happens in life is based on racism. Every court decision is based not on the law or what the jury says, but on racism. That everything that happens in the workplace is based on racism. That everything that happens is based on racism. That's what critical race theory is. That it's normal in this country, and that it's not an aberration."

(7,667 posts)6. Not sure about elsewhere but the State of Texas appoints and confirms
all public university Board of Regents. If this were to pass (Patrick's proposal) they would have a very difficult time getting any quality Professors in the future.
The toilet is swirling in terms of sanity in Texas.

(16,938 posts)5. Well, THIS move......
will certainly bring a storm of applications from "brilliant minds" that want to share their experience, knowledge, and insight with "like-minded" scholars that want to oversee the education of the students of all Texas institutions of "higher learning".......
