Incumbents Bourdeaux, McBath compete for same metro Atlanta seat in Congress

Democratic voters in Georgia’s 7th Congressional District will have a primary decision to make between two incumbent U.S. House members and a member of the state House, all of whom say they are the better candidate to serve the people of a diversifying metro Atlanta seat.

U.S. Rep. Carolyn Bourdeaux currently represents most of the voters who live in what will become the redrawn 7th District. And she has spent the past several years campaigning in the area, learning the needs of its residents and now, she says, working in Congress on their behalf.

“I have fought very hard for this district over and over again and for this community, which I deeply love and am very invested in,” she said.

But her challenger, U.S. Rep. Lucy McBath, has two additional years of experience in the House and a national profile as a gun control activist. McBath currently represents just a sliver of voters who live in what will be the 7th District, but her campaign said her reputation spreads much further and she has already gained more traction in the race than Bourdeaux.

“Voters are overwhelmingly choosing Lucy McBath in the new GA-07 because of her proven track record of standing with President (Joe) Biden, leading on voting rights, lowering the cost of prescription drugs, and fighting to keep our families safe from gun violence,” campaign manager Jake Orvis said.

1. Tough one. Have supported McBath as pro-gun control in past, she lost her son to white wing gunner.

However, Bourdeaux has been a good Rep too. Wish the GOPers hadn't drawn districts like this.



"This week, Congresswoman Bourdeaux introduced a resolution condemning the 1912 racial cleansing of Forsyth County, in which white supremacist mobs lynched Rob Edwards, Ernest Knox, and Oscar Daniels and drove out over 1,100 Black residents from their homes and land. The resolution honors the victims and their descendants, supports the creation of a national day of remembrance for Black American victims of forced migrations in the U.S., and reaffirms the House of Representatives’ commitment to combating white supremacy. Rep. Bourdeaux led all 5 of her Democratic colleagues from Georgia in this effort."

"Many descendants of the victims are still in the dark about their heritage. Elon Osby’s mother was 2 when her family stuffed all the belongings they could fit into a wagon and left behind their 60-acre plot of land, now a pristine subdivision for up-and-coming families. She talks about what happened more than a few century ago every chance she gets, in part to inspire others to embrace their history.

"“There’s some hesitancy about coming out, but we’ve got to get over it,” she said. “Every time we tell this story, someone new hears about it. If there’s a motto from me, it’s that we need to keep telling the story so that it doesn’t happen again.” The gathering Friday was organized with the help of U.S. Rep. Carolyn Bourdeaux, who authored a resolution to condemn the racist violence, acknowledge its impact on the Black community national day of remembrance for victims of forced migrations. It was co-sponsored by every Democratic member of the Georgia House delegation.

“We need to have these conversations,” said Bourdeaux, who said she read “Blood on the Root” shortly after deciding to run for public office to better understand Forsyth County’s history. “People in the white community need to understand what happened.”
