Putin's address to Russia: there's no such thing as Ukraine.

Putin says Ukraine is a geopolitical fiction created by Stalin in the 1920s. "We're ready to show you what real decommunization is."

He has really become an old crank

Putin asserts Ukraine is totally managed by foreign powers; claims Ukraine anti-corruption agencies are controlled by the U.S. Embassy in Moscow.

Putin: Do Ukrainians know their country is a colony with a puppet regime?

NOW: Putin addresses the nation, saying, “modern Ukraine was completed created by Russia.”

"We have to protect our ethnic brethren" combined with "it's not a real country anyway"

Ends with "what are you going to do about it"

When Hiler started snacking on Eastern Europe in the 1930s his appetite soon got out of control.

Most people alive today were not here in the 1930s.
90 years can really blunt institutional memory. I think Putin is counting on this.

The Crimean Tatars controlled the Crimean Khanate from 1441 to 1783, when Crimea was annexed by the Russian Empire as a target of Russian expansion.
