I really don't understand why financial crimes seem to be unique in terms of ignorance being

an excuse. To take an example, say you have a 20 year old who has sex with a person he believes is 16 in a state where the age of consent is 16. Instead the person is 15. Now he might get a lesser sentence due to a Romeo and Juliet exception but he will be found guilty. He can't use ignorance of the age of his partner as an excuse.

If a driver moves to a place where school is year round and speeds in a school zone in June, he can't plead ignorance to avoid the ticket or points on his license.

So why can a person file two documents about a building in which he values the building at $500,000,000 in one and $30,000,000 in the other, with no possible explanation for that difference, and argue he was ignorant? In the first two examples, the thing speaks for itself. Why not here?

It is because a person that owns a building valued at $500,000,000 or $30,000,000 has lots of money and hence live in a world where the rules that the rest of us live by do not apply to them.

You have a large number of people in the organization and you must be able to prove in court that a specific person knew a specific thing. In the case of tfg they did so much verbally, not through email, you need a reliable witness to make the criminal case against him… They simply do not have one.

So they can prove prices were inflated/deflated but not who was behind it.
