San Francisco's sinking, leaning Millennium Tower also sliding horizontally

The slow-motion disaster of San Francisco's Millennium Tower sounds worse than we previously knew. The tower is not just sinking into the soft mud, it is also sliding laterally and causing new problems. Naturally, building engineer Ron Hamburger acknowledges there is "horizontal movement" however he also told NBC Bay Area that "the building is not at risk due to this movement, or any movement" which seems optimistic for a leaning tower placed where we expect large earthquakes.

NBC Bay Area first reported the gap between the two structures and described it as sliding, but the building’s management said the tower was not sliding.

Hamburger said the installation of piles could reverse some of the gap.

The podium building sits on top of a five-level underground parking garage, and in 2019, state inspectors prohibited the use of an elevator connecting the garage to the tower because of a widening gap.

That gap was repaired, state inspectors signed off and the two garage elevators are back in service, said James Zaratin, Millennium Tower general manager.

“There was previously a gap between the threshold and the landing floor on the two parking garage elevators in the podium section of the building,” Zaratin said in a statement. “Mitsubishi Elevators has remedied this gap by extending the thresholds to ensure code compliance.”

City officials and building engineers concluded the building remains habitable and is safe even if a major earthquake occurs.

habitable and is safe" I felt much better about it. NOT! I plan to never be anywhere close to this "safe" building!

2. They will one day acknowledge

the building needs to be taken down. I pray that day comes before the building decides for itself.

3. Just dismantle it already.

This tower will continue to lean and settle and though I'm not an engineer, I don't see this as being a fixable issue.

No one wants to take responsibility for the fuck-up that was made by not drilling to bedrock.
