I Thought Putin would do what he did in Crimea. Take another small piece of Ukraine, something he could have probably gotten away with. Something he could have controlled without paying too big of a price.
Now we have worry Putin wants more than Ukraine. He could threaten the use of nuclear missiles if anyone tries to stop him.
The US, NATO and our allies should prepare for war. This really sucks.

(4,845 posts)Is there a period of time in history that one US political party is on the side of Putin? The simple answer is no. Along side with our side's no war altitude, there is a huge segment of people in the US that want to stay out of the Russia/Ukraine situation. It's the best time for him to do his expansion, and possibly once in a lifetime opportunity.

(13,061 posts)I thought this would be an intensification of the fake insurgency in the Donbas region, followed by the establishment of a fake republic and then an eventual annexation.
It appears instead that Russia intends to annex all of eastern Ukraine.

(3,334 posts)I could see him saying that the rebel areas were independent countries and probably send them weapons. Then wait to see how Ukraine would react.

(5,499 posts)If you have nuclear weapons you can pretty much do whatever you want to countries who do not have nuclear weapons. Other countries (even the world) may condemn your actions or impose economic sanctions but they will do little else, for fear that you will use your nukes.
That's what I'm seeing. If this becomes the new normal we as a world will be in deep shit.

(5,499 posts)I thought we should have aggressively challenged Russia when its military was exposed on the boarder. I would hope we have scenarios to prevent Russia from launching nukes. And I think we should make it clear that any attempt to use nuclear weapons would result in him being eliminated.
A lot of countries have nuclear weapons.
As I think about it, the fact that he has threatened to use nuclear weapons should be reason enough to deal with him in a very aggressive manner. Economic sanctions are not enough.
