Republics complain about Obama sign

Obama sign on A1A draws complaints

By Garrett Pelican and Michael Parnell, News-Leader

An oversized President Barack Obama greeting eastbound traffic on A1A headed toward Amelia Island is all smiles, but the president's smile hasn't proved contagious.

Complaints led Nassau County Code Enforcement to send the landowners on whose property the sign sits a notice informing them they have 10 days to remove the sign or the issue goes before the Code Enforcement Board.

The sign is not permitted, says County Building Official Bob McKinney, and would not have been permitted in any case due to its large size.

"If nothing else, the sign is larger than is permitted by zoning," McKinney said in a phone interview Monday. "If they don't take it down, it would go to the Code Enforcement Board."

The zoning, whether Residential or Open Rural, limits signs in that area to dimensions of 6 feet tall by 8 feet, with a couple feet of leeway in height available for special conditions, Interim Growth Management Director Peter King said Monday.

The zoning, whether Residential or Open Rural, limits signs in that area to dimensions of 6 feet tall by 8 feet, with a couple feet of leeway in height available for special conditions, Interim Growth Management Director Peter King said Monday. King added that the sign, which is mounted on a constructed platform, could pose a safety risk.

The issue is puzzling to Kenneth Waye, whose family owns the property, and the Nassau County Democratic Party, which owns the sign, because the same sign was posted in virtually the same spot four years ago, but on the side of a motor home.

That sign was defaced, but repaired, and was on the property throughout the 2008 campaign, Waye said.
