Just one more big lie on Putin's way to absorb Ukraine.

(18,663 posts)The target audience is the Russian people. It will resonate with them as Russia remembers their history much better than we do. They will also remember many Ukrainians welcomed the Nazi invasion and the 14th SS-Volunteer Division "Galicia"

(1,439 posts)Look around the internet and see how many leftist sources are trying to draw a connection between Ukraine and nazis.
There's a piece on counterpunch from 2/11, which I won't link because fuck those guys, that has the following in it: "Right now, NATO is fueling a resurgence of Nazism in Ukraine for the sake of a stronger position in its struggle with Russia. "
Putin will catch a few rightwingers with this messaging too, of course, but you can't really expect rightwingers to parrot and amplify "getting rid of nazis is good", for obvious reasons.

(33,345 posts)It's not the vast majority of Ukrainians, but that is the propaganda story that Putin's compliant media are selling.
It is also being sold here in the US. Google "Ukraine Neonazi" and 10 zillion stories pop up. I saw that accusation on a HS friends' FB post 3 days ago - presumably from a US veteran. Then yesterday the same accusation came out of Putin's creepy mouth.
There are populist militias in the United States that I call Neo-Nazi. You all know who they are, and you know they're a small minority.

Not just Ukraine: 'Putin uses Iran to make America look weak.' LISTEN
President Vladimir Putin stated in an address to the Russian people on Thursday morning that the purpose of this operation is to protect people who, for eight years now, have been facing humiliation and genocide perpetrated by the Kyiv regime.
To this end, we will seek to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine, as well as bring to trial those who perpetrated numerous bloody crimes against civilians including against citizens of the Russian Federation, he said, condemning far-right nationalists and neo-Nazis in Ukraine.
Shortly after the speech, the Ukrainian government's official Twitter account posted a depiction of Adolf Hitler proudly caressing the face of Putin. It wrote: "This is nto a 'meme,' but our and your reality right now."

(19,993 posts)Meant to trigger the Russian people into remembering the "great war" against the Nazi enemies and unite them in support. Maybe also pick up some support from Nazi haters elsewhere.
Like the "genocide in eastern Ukraine" claim: bullshit.

(53,959 posts)Also, it plays well with Putin's allies in other nations, including ours, on both sides of the political spectrum. There is a fascination of people like him and his allies, to use "Nazi" when it's their behavior which is 'Nazi-like', and they get bonus points, especially with extremists, if the Nazi terminology is used against Jews!
