I am curious. What then?
Sanctions are not going to stop Ukrainian suffering.

(53,035 posts)I don't think they'll do anything other than sanctions for Ukraine.

(6,139 posts)their goal is to instill the new government. All bordering countries are endangered by these actions.
Right, put the Jewish Russian-speaker-hating Russophone Nazi Jew on trial.
The corporatist Putin misses irony.
Or maybe the Poo-Bear (punning on Vinni-pukh, "Winnie the Pooh", but meaning actual poo) has had a dozen too many microstrokes.
Or perhaps kuru? Or BSE? One can only hope.

(1,990 posts)This goes beyond one political leader. For the record, I do not believe he will be assassinated. He is savvy.

(35,317 posts)It has a home-grown "5th column." A smallish percentage of the population really is ur-Stalinist, and another small %age rather likes the idea of being part of a triumphant, powerful Russia.
Then there are those who, when push comes to shove, will think, "I can betray X and save my people--and be a hero for my cowardice, even if it's not recognized." A certain percentage will always think that it's better to suffer in public humiliation, yet be fed and clothed, than stand up and be willing to die or be seriously hurt, financially or physically, for one's "beliefs".
Had a student years ago (in 2015, to be less vague). Russophone. Identified as Ukrainian. Dripped Ukr tokens--backpack with Ukr flag, jacket with Ukr trident on it. Adopted by Americans, in my class. Loaned him books in Russian to help him keep his Russian fluent and improving. Was going to "visit" his birth mother in Ukraine, he said he told his parents. In fact, he said, he was going to enlist to fight the Russians in the Donbas. I told him not to, he was barely legal to do so in Ukraine. He was in the system early in the next school year, then he vanished. Don't know if he was killed or if he just stayed because he was barely legal.
Few former students make me wonder, "Gee, I wonder if they were killed by Putin's zeroes?"

(855 posts)I don't know what it is but there has to be some order of succession. And I bet the first several are all in separate secure, non-disclosed locations.

In a video statement, Ukrainian President Zelensky says the enemy has marked him as the number one target. "They want to destroy Ukraine politically by destroying the head of state. We have information that enemy sabotage groups have entered Kyiv." Says he will remain.
