People often act out of fear to prevent a situation. Their fear based action causes the very situation they feared to arise. Putin was convinced democracy in Ukraine would spread throughout Russia so he sought to squelch it. I think the actions of the Ukrainians defending themselves against that is what is going to spread democracy throughout Russia.
