I cant find the comment (yes Im trying to fish out who it was)
I did a quick study.
1 year of conscription*. That means a lot of the soldier are really really green. Sure their are long timers. I cant find a breakdown on that.
The draft is by hand. They have to hand you the draft summons.
2 two month windows every year. Often kids just hide to avoid being served the summons.
There is a very active network of mothers teaching other mothership to get their kid out of the military. Very active network.
Moscow and other larger cities are hard to meet quotas due to access to information and opportunities.
Brutal systematic hazing of conscripts.
Many kids are rejected due to malnutrition and other health issues. Human Rights Report below (older report) says at least 1/2 of the conscripts are rejected.
* having been in the US Army Id say even with the excellent training I really knew what I was doing after about a year. A couple field problems and then I had learned a lot of tricks and what to expect.

I said I couldnt find a break down. Obviously Gen. Clark knows way more than me but this is a good picture of many who are currently in their army.

(10,849 posts)They've been experimenting with NCO's lately but have no experienced NCO's like we do in the US military.
Using Jr Lieutenants for the same job does not work as well, they don't have the time in Sr Srgts do.

We watched propaganda films about Soviet readiness about how well trained they were.
Later in life I worked with a Russian who served in the Soviet Army and told him about the training intensive Soviet Army he laughed his ass off.
