General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI keep seeing people refer to the Ukrainian conflict as the worst fighting in Europe since WWII.
The Balkan Wars of the '90s come to mind as pretty significant (genocide, refugee crisis, hundreds of thousands of deaths, NATO involvement, etc). Greece had a civil war in the late '40s--the first proxy war of the Cold War. The Soviets invaded Czechoslovakia in 1968.
Obviously, this Russian invasion is a horrific crime and has the *potential* for the greatest geopolitical implications and casualties since WWII, but I keep seeing people write about it as if nothing like this has been seen in Europe since 1945, and I don't think that's the case.

Think we should do so now. Might change my mind as it unrolls.

(8,300 posts)That being said if thousands of Russian troops are already dead, it may become worse than the conflicts you discuss. We won't know how bad it will get until it is over.

(13,600 posts)It could very well become the "worst fighting" in Europe since WWII, maybe even worse, if Putin tries to go beyond Ukraine. But I'm pretty sure putin knows that his forces would be crushed handily by NATO.

(54,403 posts)This could escalate to that level but is nowhere near that so far. Anyway, there are a completely different set of circumstances, ethnic groups and personalities involved this time.
Putin certainly had some gall to tell the rest of the world not to get involved. He is like a spoiled privileged kid telling everyone else, this is MY invasion, and mine only! If you want an armed conflict, go invade your own neighbors.
