Russia Issues Ominous Warning to Finland, Sweden Should They Join NATO

Russia's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman has said that Moscow would have to respond if Sweden and Finland intended to join NATO.

Maria Zakharova held a press conference on Friday and reflected on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the intentions of Russia going forward.

A clip of her speech has begun to go viral on social media as she appears to issue a threat aimed at Sweden and Finland, saying it would have "serious military-political repercussions." The video has amassed over 300,000 views.

5. Until Russia warned against it, they probably hadn't even thought about joining NATO.

About the only thing I can think of to get Finland and Sweden to even contemplate joining NATO would be a Russian warning them not to.

"Just in case we determine it necessary to invade you guys, we thought it would be nice if we were sure NATO won't be coming to your aid as NATO members."

Yep, that's REALLY reassuring to a small, traditionally neutral country an hour's flight from St. Petersburg.

Even if history has shown it not to have been always respected, THEY have always wanted it, and if that is the desire of a majority of their populations, then that's how it should be.

... this is a blunder. My heritage is Swedish. My relatives there are numerous... there is a Trump-like group, led by anti-immigrant feelings. However, it is a minority. A majority of Swedes like not being part of Russian or American "control" areas. Of course, the culture aligns more with the "west" - but they like their independence. NATO has been an issue, and now it's much-discussed. Russian propaganda says the Ukraine "crisis" is caused by NATO. Some consider this theory has merit... but the Swedes and Scandinavian neighbors are turned OFF by this war. What turns them OFF even more is being told, by Russia, what groups they can and can not join. They went EU and will consider NATO, especially with yahoos like Russian Foreign Minister Maria Zakharova telling them NO. That's a PUSH to join.

12. Squint at the history books a bit, and Russians are also former Swedish vikings.

But, squint again, and Ukranians could be former Swedish vikings

Vikings - they were going places.

Vikings seem to be the SPAM of the middle ages.

13. Russia's history is one long warning to other nations to increase their security, though.

Russian/USSR imperialism is, after all, THE big reason NATO was created, growing to 30 nations over the past 70 years and more currently in the process of joining.

From what I recall, neutrality worked for Sweden in WWII because of its geography up there -- big cost to conquer for little gain. Finland allied with Germany to, guess what? -- get back land taken by Russia.

They may not want to join NATO, but the stability and military defense secured for most of Europe by NATO has of course provided real security, if not total, but who has that?

It's easy to predict neither will ask to join NATO if Russia itself doesn't force them to. Whether NATO would allow them with Nuclear Russia threatening war if they did is another question.

Of course, those 30 nations? Russia's history is of forcing nations to seek NATO protection.
