To put this in perspective from 1979-1989 during Russias war with Afghanistan: Russia lost 333 Helicopter, 118 jets, 147 tanks, 15k personnel. The Ukrainians have destroyed nearly as many tanks, 1 tenth the number of airplanes, 1 fifth the personnel in two days. This is coming from Ukraine's Military so who knows if this inflated for morale.

(8,301 posts)Dozens of burnt up Russian vehicles, weapons, planes getting shot down, etc. It looks just from the footage, these numbers could be pretty accurate.

(38,958 posts)Even if the numbers are off, which I suspect they are, things are not going well for the Soviets.

Putin may be relying on ground forces more than I thought.

(4,356 posts)Not from what I"m seeing. I will admit it is hard to get information but you can piece it together if your persistent. I don't think the Ukrainian military has any reporters embedded with them. That's smart. Makes it hard for the Russians to get information about tactics and movements.

(21,359 posts)in the way of air defense. We should have armed them with Patriot missiles. I fear that Russia can level Kyiv with its air power but doing so is going to enrage the world. Putin got into something he can't win.

(25,816 posts)from the rest of the world economically. They're fucked for a long time. The average Russian
citizen does not like what Putin is trying to do. Air travel to and from Russia is shut down, sports events
are dropping Russia, just about every kind of trade is being affected. Putin's got a military mess
in Ukraine, a looming economic disaster and dissidents at home--yeah, more than he can chew for
certain. Bless the brave Ukraine resistance, they are taking the actual physical brunt, but they will
win this, and long after it's over, Russia will still be screwed.

(32,086 posts)have been helping arm Ukraine with weapons including Javelin missiles. I'm assuming we'll be sending them more as this drags on. Also consider that Ukraine's military is not exactly small and defenseless, as many seem to assume. They're not the Russian army, but they're also not rag-tag. We sent personnel to help train them in the guerilla tactics that were used on use when we invaded Fallujah in Iraq. And, consider that there have been numerous reports that some in the Russian military aren't exactly battle-ready. Lots of reports of soldiers not wanting to fight their neighbors, and other reports that many are weakened from insufficient food and water. Maybe those numbers are inflated. Maybe not. I tend to believe that they're closer to accurate than not.
