But if this happens, if he backed the wrong horse, then Trump's just going to look like an idiot here.

(58,785 posts)I think the list known and/or strongly suspected of people compromised and having cooperated with Putin is much longer and they do discuss them privately.
PatSeg
(47,498 posts)The most disturbing part was the laughter that followed the remark.
I agree, the list is undoubtedly much longer today. Too many people in politics are motivated by power and greed and Putin has their number, not to mention kompromat on a lot of them.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)politicians and other operatives these days to NOT compromise themselves given what they're part of. All the Kremlin needs is someone collecting evidence, but my guess is they shorten the time necessary to develop assets by setting them up in the first place.
Anyone can blackmail, though. Democratic insiders must invest extensive attention in figuring out who's working for who.
PatSeg
(47,498 posts)some republicans retired early from political office during the Trump years. Either they couldn't compromise THAT much or they had issues they couldn't afford to be made public.
Sadly, being a decent person with principles doesn't get one far in the republican party these days. I remember Jeff Flake's impressive and emotional speech on the senate floor, but most republicans just blew it off. Being a republican and having genuine principles just doesn't work anymore. Look at Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger. I disagree with them on almost everything, but at least they are loyal to the country they serve. They got thrown under the bus by fellow republicans.
The republican party needs to die. It is too late to salvage it.

(58,785 posts)conventional respectability to protect, for themselves or family. I'm serious in believing the Repub Party's been attracting sociopaths and concscienceless psychopaths in numbers far larger than their representation in the population, as well as extremists. And then there's what their voters have turned into.
PatSeg
(47,498 posts)Each new batch of republican candidates are worse than the ones before. Every carpetbagger and grifter in the country is now attracted to the republican party - so much money and power and no needed qualifications, experience, or skills. You just know that some of them saw fools like Trump on TV and said, "Shit, I can do that! There's huge market for crazy and outrageous and I have plenty to spare." They are performers first and foremost, but too farfetched for the movies and circuses aren't hiring these days.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)That says it, all right.
But the Republican Party is -- with toxic extremist and political warfare assistance.
You're right. We all need to grab the hoes and rakes and head to the polls.

(28,941 posts)I'm sure POTUS can take the bark off trees when the occasion calls for it.
Reminds me of a Truman story: During a WH soiree a DC society matron approached Bess and said, "Mrs Truman, can't you have the president used a better word than 'manure'?
Mrs Truman, "Do have any idea how long it took me to get him to use manure instead of the Missouri term?"

(47,498 posts)I don't underestimate him; I admire him for not going jab for jab. What's the old saying about rolling around with pigs in the mud?
However, I think a well-timed twist of the knife, like this one is, is essential, as trump's remarks were egregious. If one was ever going to wield the rapier, this was the time.

(47,498 posts)He saves those little zingers for the right moment and uses them sparingly and discriminately. This was the right moment and it was short and to the point. Trump on the other hand can't open his mouth without insulting and denigrating someone. It is almost like a compulsion with him. I'm not sure he can help himself, like Tourette's syndrome.

(10,185 posts)He made O5 in 16 years. I have friends in the military who did it in a lot less time. Yeah, the KGB is not like our military, but if he was so good and smart, why didn't he make rank quicker?
And he stepped into a position that was formerly a dictatorship. And then he just took it back to the dictatorship. I think it would have been more difficult, more like a real leader, to have taken it in a different way, to a democracy, real communism or socialism. That would have required dynamic leadership to step out of the past dictatorial frame of government and into another form of government. But Putin didn't have the vision and drive that effort would have taken.
I really think Putin took the easy way because he's a psychopath. Much like American CEOs and the filthy rich, he does the easy things to get himself wealth and power. Most of the time those easy things are cruel, narcissistic, nasty and harmfull to others. But that's not leadership. For a psychopath, that's going with the flow.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)to live a very dangerous life for decades. It's others who've died or are in prison or exiled as a result.
He may well be a psychopath, but I'd argue that anyone who survived against years of extremely intense and ruthless (murderous!) competition to become dictator of Russia has to have had a lot more than luck going for him.
And seems to me that anyone who leads a nation is a leader, the question being what kind. In any case, a majority of Russians supported the invasion because he's their leader and they're followers. And if those opposed are too noisy about it, the leader orders police to clear and round up however many thousands are needed from the streets, imprisons the leaders, and maybe has a couple of special object lessons tossed out of high windows.
I can certainly agree that this one's a cruel, possibly narcissistic or disordered in some other way, definitely extremely nasty and harmful leader. He wouldn't be considered competent by democratic standards, but then Biden wouldn't last long enough among the wolf pack at the top of Russia's government to become a lousy authoritarian dictator.
Farmer-Rick
(10,185 posts)Putin did. When he took over it was headed into a democracy. He got voted into office ...at least the first time.
I really don't believe that the majority of Russians want this war. Like the majority of Americans didn't want W's and Cheney's war. But the US was attacked and nobody attacked Putin. Putin's war is criticized by all corners because he inspires only criminals and thieves like him.
No, he's not a bad leader. He's not a leader at all. Just cause you become a dictator doesn't make you a leader, in fact it's just the opposite of a leader. He's a psychopath creating a little psychotic world in Russia. That's not leadership. That's just doing what he wants. He was an incompetent officer......making 05 in 16 years that's hmmm average or a bit below average. He had no vision. He inspires no one.
He uses propaganda and manipulates our very stupid American oligarchs like Trump. I've met good leaders and they don't lead by fear, punishment and hate. That's the lazy man's way to manage. But not indicative of great leadership skills.
No, becoming a tyrannical dictator does not make him a good leader. It makes him a crazy man.

(1,690 posts)Those two represent the worst of their countries, not the best like we are so fortunate to have in Joe and Kamala. Thank goodness enough of us voted to put them in office, or just imagine if TFG ( and his complicit republicans) and his russian BFF were running wild.
The part that really pisses me off, is not the 2 megalomaniacs in question, but the fact that the republican party has thrown in with our Orange would be Hitler, Stalin, Saddam etc. This is the republican party were talking about, not the KKK or American Nazi Party etc, but the other major political party. WTF is wrong with these people ? Are you out of your fucking minds ? Dont you realize how dangerous this path is ? Sheesh.

(12,870 posts)The Republican response to Russia attacking Ukraine has been to attack the current American president. They don't see this in terms of authoritarianism vs democracy; they see it as an opportunity to spin false narratives for partisan political advantage.
The sad truth is the Republican Party is still in thrall to and following the lead of the Russian asset Putin helped put in the White House. TFG idolizes the Russian dictator and has similar ambitions for himself, caring not a whit for the institutions of democracy which are the foundation of American greatness.
The Cold War may have ended but the global struggle between democracy and authoritarianism goes on. Russia's invasion of Ukraine is a hot battlefield in a conflict being waged on many fronts, including right here in the USA. Many on the right have heaped praise Vladimir Putin while characterizing the Jan 6 violent assault on our nation's Capitol as either a false flag operation or legitimate political discourse. In the wake of the attempted coup they are still embracing the Big Lie of a stolen election and taking action to actually steal the next one by suppressing the vote and installing partisan operatives to overturn results at the state level.
To defeat authoritarianism abroad we must first win the struggle to secure our democracy at home.
musclecar6
(1,690 posts)Youve identified exactly what needs to be done. Its disheartening that we have to fight ignorant fuckheads in our country to preserve democracy. You would think 100 percent of our citizens would be all in to not let authoritarianism be our form of government. The USA has been a beacon of light and hope for people throughout the world. The good news is, we couldnt have better leaders in Joe and Kamala to constantly beat the drum to not let the dark side of our crazy citizens take over, as they are trying to steer us into the ditch.
Martin Eden
(12,870 posts)... for authoritarianism, or consciously taking that side in this struggle. American Nazis have been around for generations, but the poisonous well from which that springs has been overflowing since Putin's orange asset energized and exposed the rotten core of American "conservatism."
Biden, Harris, and other Democratic leaders need to reaffirm the core of American values and call out those who betray it without falling into the trap of bitter divisiveness. Americans at war with each other is exactly what Putin had in mind when he threw his efforts into putting TFG in the White House.

(6,884 posts)necause I might be willng to concede that Putin has a touch of evil genius.
That ploy of "recognizing" traitors in certain areas was much easier and less costly than setting up an actual false flag operation, complete with Russian bodies, as an excuse. And pure evil.
But "clever" does not a genius make.
Expect Trump** to offer to recognize Florida and Texas as independent nations ... for starters.
