There has been a lot of talk of groupthink inside Putin's inner circle

I posted this in a thread but thought it was worth its own thread:

I have heard a number of pundits talk about people in his inner circle being so scared of Putin, everyone is afraid to tell him he's making a bad decision and the group who already appear to be a group of radicals have no one to be a devils' advocate and suggest the potential downsides to a decision. This leads to classic groupthink.

I have always felt communications courses on things like groupthink should be mandatory for anyone running for office in the US. A huge number of bad political decisions over the years were because of this. I had a communications class on groupthink in college and our group ended up doing some ourselves and made some horrible decisions. To this day the experiential learning from that class has been one of the most important lessons I received in college. If I were President of any country, I would surround myself with all kinds of people and opinions and have a designated person to act as a devil's' advocate to bring up possibilities the group might not think of.

3. Even in ancient times, groupthink was moderated with roles like the fool or court jester

They could deliver bad news and I’ve heard of a story where a fool made fun of the Chinese emperor’s plan to paint the Great Wall of China, saving perhaps many, many lives.

Russia needs groups pointing out the absurdities of Putinism. I think it’s been satire and the jesters that has caused changes here… Jon Stewart called attention to the medical issues of 9/11 first responders and people have laughed the KKK and now-Nazis out of towns before as well.

Watching the film, Downfall, The Case Against Boeing, this was groupthink that killed over 400 people. How many corporations are operating like this believing they are "strong leadership." Boeing actually moved its headquarters to Chicago to get away from the pushback from the safety folks. The test pilot sunk into groupthink to allow absurdity to prevail.

Some countries hold such corporate decisions that result in damage, criminally liable. Good idea. We have to recognize that people are more malleable than we would like to believe - and lazy too. Easier to go along to get along.
