(7,633 posts)declaring that for sure, Russia will steamroll Ukraine with 3 days.
So far that has not happened. Russia is not the former USSR, they are not a superpower, their economy is 1/3 that of California. Their military is under trained and constituted of conscripts who have no idea what they are doing in Ukraine, on the other side you have people fighting for their country. ready to die for it.
Putin was planning for a shock operation which did not work so now his troops are running out of fuel, food and other supplies. Russia also has not been able to establish air superiority thanks to the Ukrainian air force but also the large influx of anti-aircraft weapons that the west finally started pumping into Ukraine.
If they can hold another week or so, I think Putin will either have to retreat with the tail between his legs or else do something unthinkable such as level off Kyiv if he can.

(24,890 posts)I see them starting to use their heavy artillery, ground to ground batteries, and indiscriminately trying to level Kiev and maybe another big city. Basically out of frustration that the 2 day war plan failed
That will be a horror.

(65,076 posts)The per capita GDP is 85th in the world. (A bit under $12,000)
By contrast, Canada is a bit under $53,000, the US a bit over $69,000, Japan is around $41,000 & Germany is a bit under $51,000.
They needed this to be a blitz, because they don't have the resources for an occupation against an insurgency.
This appears to be a colossal miscalculation. And, perhaps a gross overestimation of their military efficacy.
