Funny story, if true. And... on a trivial pedantic note, I always saw Odesa spelled O D E S S A in the past, but maybe that was wrong.

eta: per Wiki, Odessa is the English translation of the Russian version of the city's name

Original Greek is generally two s's (sigmas) in extant literature
Russian uses two s's (c's)
Ukrainian tends to use one s (c)
