Putin is used to working with professionals.
He sends secret agents to London or Berlin to assassinate someone, and they do it.
Stone-cold professionals who do as they are told.
No questions asked, no problemo.
He sends the Wagner Group to Syria or Africa to kill people in a dirty civil war, and they do it.
Stone-cold professionals who do as they are told.
No questions asked, no problemo.
Putin has been surrounded by ruthless killers all his life. He has commanded ruthless killers all his life.
He thinks that everybody is like that.
He thinks it's normal to simply kill people who get in your way.
He thinks that if he orders russian soldiers to kill the russian-speaking citizens of a country that was Russia's best friend until 10 years ago, they will do it, simply for the reason that he ordered them to kill.
He thinks that if he orders a military invasion, the russian people will do as they are told and go along with the nationalistic jingoism.
Now imagine Putin's shock and surprise as he discovers that russian soldiers and russian citizens think that killing your fellow russian-speaking friends is wrong.

(1,328 posts)What if Putin has held back his best troops and actually moved them toward Finland and Sweden? Im supposing that he couldnt do that without those two countries noticing. But why not worry about that too? (My capacity for worry seems to have no bounds).
