(63,221 posts)What a wonderful gift to be so talented. How did you ever keep your composure? I would have been in tears the whole time!
I sang in the choir in school growing up, but I wish I had learned an instrument.
We had a piano, but I wanted to play something less "girly" like the trumpet or trombone and my parents only wanted me to play the piano, flute or violin, so we never really settled on anything. My sister played the piano and didn't really take to it and both of my brother's played the Alto Sax, which I also would have loved to have played.

(34,134 posts)I had to retire from the symphony this last year because of my heart troubles. Wind players need wind and I did not have enough. Almost 50 years, I guess that is enough. I will never get over losing it though.
I never had a singing voice, I would have loved to have been in a choir! I wonder why they were so set on those instruments? I bet you would have loved the sax. You know, there are a lot of seniors (I do not know how old you are but I am certainly a senior) who take lessons on something and a lot of music teachers who need the dough. You can even do it over Zoom etc. My youngest teaches bass lessons over the Internet. I am getting ready to restore some Highland Smallpipes and hopefully can learn to play them. They are bellows blown so I do not need to use my air and they are much quieter and more pleasant that the big bagpipes although I am very fond of them too! It is never too late and a great thing to do when you are retired.

(63,221 posts)One of my favorite instruments. I don't know why I never considered that or the oboe. I am not quite a senior yet, but I really love jazz - Ella, Billie, Sarah Vaughan, Peggy Lee, Nina Simone, Aretha, Dinah Washington, Helen Forrest, Anita O'Day, etc.
I have a deep, alto singing voice and have been listening to jazz and big band long enough so that I can mimic some of their sounds, but I would love to take lessons so that I had more confidence.
I really wish I could retire soon so that I could indulge in the things that really interest me. I can't really afford it, but if I am forced to one of these days, I am sure I will find a way to work it out. I think my parents just wanted me to play socially acceptable instruments for "young ladies" and I wasn't quite aware yet but I knew I loved jazz.
Highland Smallpipes? Are you Scottish? That would be so cool. This is what I love about DU. There are so many interesting people here!

(34,134 posts)it when I am there. Both of my sons are professional musicians doing mostly jazz in Kansas City. I never even tried it.
A deep alto voice, PERFECT! Sultry jazz tunes, lol! Go for it, why not? The only way to get to do music is to do it, a lot. I am assuming you sing along with your recordings? Go to a bar where they let you sit in. Get to know a group, talk to them during breaks and tell them about what you want to do. You never know, prepare a standard that you would not be afraid to do and wait until someone during a session asks if you want to sing a tune then go for it. Sing a little, be a part of the improvisation and you will be so hooked you will never know what hit you!
Not Scottish, only a tiny bit and a bit more Irish. My Great Grandmother was a Clancy, cousin to the Clancy brothers but I barely knew her and never heard the stories. She may not have ever known them.
A good friend of mine who played in the symphony with me was a guy who collected and played everything he could get his hands on. He was a music professor at a nearby University. He died suddenly and I had borrowed his Smallpipes to hopefully learn. His partner told me to keep them. That is why I have them. I was wanting to learn Uilleann pipes but nope....too big and too much for me then he told me about his smallpipes. One day, they need repair and I need someone who knows how to do that.
