A leftie acquaintance brought this up, just want to know if it's something to be concerned about. She isn't big on Zelensky, gave this as a reason.

If there are Nazi's in Ukraine, these are them.
That said, if they and the Russian army want to kill one another, OK.

(21,656 posts)It looks like a Ukranian militia that was made a part of Ukraine's national guard. All that looks to be prior to Zelenskyy coming to power and has been stationed in one of the separatist regions of Ukraine... You know, one of the regions Putin declared a new country.
Sounds like nothing Zelenskyy has had any control over to do anything about and a bullshit right wing talking point that your acquaintance is trying to pawn off on you.

(3,282 posts)They started off as a private militia that showed up to fight in Crimea/East back in 2014 and were eventually rolled into the Ukrainian National Guard. They were basically a far-right militia. In those days Ukraine barely had a functioning army and ewre fighting Russian backed units, so they took anyon.e they could get. The unit, along with a lot of other volunteer units were rolled into the regular army and national guard. They still have right wing ties and there are legit neo-nazis in the unit.
However, trying to use Azov to paint all of the Ukrainian military as nazis is just fucking Russian Propoganda.
Besides that, in a desperate situation you take the help you can get to survive.

This is a reason not to support Zelenskyy or Ukraine?
against an army (very well armed) of 200,000 Russians?

Basically they are a fascist faction embedded in the security forces and police in Ukraine.
They sound like the RW nutjob Proud Boys or Oathkeepers. They hate Jews, LGBTQ, Gypsies (Roma), Liberals, and Feminists. You know, just like Steve Bannon or Vladdy Daddy.
The came to prominence in fighting the Russians in Donbas. They are ultra Nationalists (Make Ukraine Great Again).
They have minor political power, but they had to clean up the really bad hate speech to get even that.
They don't have anything to do with Zelenskyy as far as I can tell but they are a legitimate political movement inside Ukraine.
These are probably "the Nazis" that Bond Villain Putin refers to in his "reasons for War."
