With the Russian invasion of Ukraine getting more horrific, Donald Trump and his allies are frantically erasing the truth about Trumps relations with Ukraine. Trump absurdly claims that as president, he stood strong behind Ukraine and NATO, even as his spinners comically downplay his corrupt and deeply malevolent betrayal of our ally.
The obvious rejoinder to this spin is that Trump got impeached for withholding military aid to strongarm Ukrainian President into manufacturing propaganda to help Trumps reelection. This came even as Zelensky pleaded for help against Russian aggression, which the world is now witnessing unfold in all its horror.
But the focus only on that episode risks oversimplifying the story. It casts this recent history as being mainly about Trumps personal corruption, i.e., his effort to use foreign policy to smear his campaign opponent.
A broader focus shows that this saga was, and is, really about the U.S.s foreign policy posture: In episode after episode, Trump aligned our interests with those of Russian President Vladimir Putin and against those of Ukraine, NATO and the West.
Trump acted against U.S. interests with the consequence of aiding Russian interests," Alexander Vindman, the former Lt. Col. who testified dramatically against Trump, told me.

Thanks for sharing. Ive said Trump is made from the same cloth as Putin.
He scorched our country repeatedly and has gotten away with it!

(8,052 posts)in his dealings with two of the most mobster-like goons ever to "grace" the US government, Trump and Giuliani. He probably thought we were as corrupt and untrustworthy as Russia. What a fucking embarrassment we were.

(9,357 posts)I think Trump and Putin conceived this shit to help both of them in their respective countries. It's not working for Putin and I don't see America rushing to Trump, who, of course, used the war to declare his forever candidacy again. Both need to get spanked over this shit.

(38,309 posts)Putin would be a hero for "reuniting" Russia, and Trump would be the hero for "negotiating" the terms of the cease-fire, at the expense of the Ukrainian people and their sovereignty, of course.
Putin did not expect Biden would win, and it was too late for Putin to stop the ball rolling without losing face.
Russia doesn't seem to know it yet, but they've already lost and will be split like Germany after World War II, with China managing the economic resources the east, and the European Union and U.S.A. managing the economic resources of the West.
The question now is how many people have to die before Putin backs down or gets dragged off the stage, dead or alive, by his own people.

(8,052 posts)A win-win for Trump and Russia if he delivered (manufactured) the "goods" on Biden--they could show Zelensky was corrupt IN FAVOR of the GOP, thus costing Ukraine (and its security) the future support of US Democrats.

(9,357 posts)To strengthen Putin and to get Trump back in our good graces with Donnie playing the strongman role. Only trouble is they both have serious problems -- Putin with his failing military exercise and Trump with his silly theories and not-so-silly legal problems.

(82,849 posts)Specifically, "Trump's personal corruption." This part of the story really needs to take root and be mentioned in any analysis or look-back to the former guy's administration. The former guy and his entire administration was corrupt. It's a simple statement, well supported by the historical facts.
