Documenting Equipment Losses During The 2022 Russian Invasion Of Ukraine

Last edited Tue Mar 1, 2022, 04:22 PM - Edit history (1)

Edit to add:

To hopefully ease any concern about this link, this list is published by Oryx, a collaboration that has been documenting military equipment, conflicts, & losses around the world since 2014.
Their work documenting military equipment & conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya, Turkey, North Korea & elsewhere around the world has been extensive.

In 2020 they published a book on North Korea's military ("The Armed Forces of North Korea" by Stijn Mitzer and Joost Oliemans) published by Helion & Company Ltd (UK) who is regarded as "one of the world's leading publishers and booksellers of military history in the English language."
Their book is available on Amazon if you'd like to look at it, or direct from Helion at helion.co.uk

I'm noting this because I realize most folks probably aren't familiar with Oryx, as they are a small collaboration & their work doesn't make "the front pages," as it were, or get coverage in the mainstream media.

I would not post a link to their site if I had not already known about them & been looking at their site for a few years now for info on weapons & military equipment losses.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A detailed list of the destroyed and captured vehicles and equipment of both sides can be seen below. This list is constantly updated as additional footage becomes available.

1. Why on Earth would I trust that link?

Why on Earth do you trust it?

I strongly advise everyone not to click it. I also suggest you self-delete your post. Not every random link is trustworthy. Truly.

3. Well, to answer your first question...

...I would hope that you would trust it because I posted it.
I hope my posts here have not left you with the impression that I don't check out sources of information & post untrustworthy links.

If I don't trust the link, I don't click it myself, & I would never post it. Despite what my wife may tell you, I'm not dumb. (But then she's brilliant & speaks multiple languages & seems to know EVERYTHING that ever happened in history so, I can't compete with her.)

To answer your second question, please see the updated OP. I edited it to add a bit of info about the Oryx collaboration for folks who aren't familiar with them.

14. 15+ days have passed since you attacked me because I posted that link.

In those 15+ days I have explained (many days ago) why I trust Oryx as a source, & how their work has been recognized, & you have not acknowledged it or apologized to me.

Since then, they have been recognized by Forbes in a recent article... "From a high level, it appears clear that the Russian offensive has stalled, however, the actual state of each military is fairly unclear. One commonly cited source of information about both is Oryx, a blog that tracks the destruction of military equipment through open-source reports (e.g., social media, Reddit), with each claim backed up by photographic evidence. The equipment list consists of heavy weapon systems and vehicles — including tanks, armored vehicles, infantry fighting vehicles, trucks, aircraft and watercraft."

Perhaps that (& what I posted in my updated OP) is not enough for you personally, & that's ok. That's your choice & you have every right to make your choice. What I do not respect is attacking & insulting fellow DU members.

15. Well now it's been 29 days since you attacked & insulted me...

...in a disgusting & unjustified way, due to your own lack of knowledge of foreign (non-US) information sources & your lack of desire to learn about them, & even after I explained to you, you STILL have not apologized to me.

What am I supposed to think of that?

I guess it's time for me to reluctantly acknowledge the reality of the situation & say I USED to respect you. I USED to think that your posts were well-reasoned & intelligent & articulate. I USED to enjoy reading them all. I USED to think you were a good person.

But... at this point... you have shown me I was wrong.

You have shown me what lies behind the facade of your well-worded posts. You choose your words carefully, but I now realize your carefully-chosen words hide a hateful vindictive individual who lashes out & attacks those who make you uncomfortable by exposing you to information sources that fall outside of your comfortable familiar "bubble". And, when that person explains to you & gives you background information on those sources, you still don't have the honesty & integrity to investigate & verify those sources, acknowledge your own lack of knowledge, & apologize.

That truly stuns me, & I am truly disappointed in you. I expected more. I thought you were much more of a person than that. I gave you a chance to reply to my message, twice? 3 times? A choice to redeem yourself at least 3 times & you have apparently chosen not to. I am truly sorry that you are not the worthy individual I initially thought you were.

At this point, I feel like I'm being waaay too accommodating, but, because of the initial respect I had for you, & believe me, I had a LOT of respect for you, I will give you the opportunity to DM me, so that we might exchange phone numbers & talk directly. If you don't care about that... then... you really don't fucking care & all I can say is... good fucking bye.

17. Here goes:

First, I did not insult you. When I replied to your post, there was almost no content in it, other than something about a list I should go look at. My reply was that I would not click that link, and a suggestion that nobody do so. Why? Because the URL included a word that means "spy" in Russian. "spion"

I do not, and suggest that nobody click on unfamiliar links. I do suggest that people writing original posts on DU include some excerpt of what someone might find at such a link, and some information about the source. Later, after my reply, you added some information about the link.

I did not return to the thread, because I rarely return to threads that didn't provide me any useful information without clicking some link to a site unknown to me. I'm not really that familiar with you, frankly, and so, I simply went elsewhere on DU.

If you notice, few people replied to your original post. That may well be because it contained almost no content and a link to a site that most people don't recognize. You may like and trust that site, but my question was why anyone else would, without some hint of what they might find there.

I'm sorry you are upset. That was not my intent. I suggest that, in the future, when you want someone to visit some website where you found information, you include an excerpt from that website, along with some information about the source, if it is likely to be unfamiliar to DUers who might never have encountered it before.

To believe them...

You'd have to believe that this war is destroying MORE Tanks and APC's than the Battle of Kursk, the greatest armored battle in history that involved millions of soldiers.

800 APC in a day?

No day of Kursk saw 800 APC destroyed.

13. I agree. That's one of the reasons I look at Oryx. They want verified info.

And, they don't have an agenda to make one side or the other look better.

As I said in the updated OP, they've been doing this for at least 8 years & when it comes to their lists of military equipment lost/destroyed they take a "pics or it didn't happen" attitude.

They don't just rely on "media reports said" or "some government official said" or "some guy on Twitter/Facebook/etc said." They want documented confirmation.

I don't always agree with their political takes, for example an article positing that the US was sabotaging Turkey's drone program for some reason, but, having family & friends around the globe I've come to realize that there's a danger of getting trapped inside the "American information bubble" & losing a true global perspective on current events.
