right now it is extremely hard getting in and out of Ukraine.

Obviously they were pulled out, to avoid being an issue for a wider war.
Also, Ukraine has about 600,000 battle or near battle trained personnel who have passed through the armed forces and the insurgent regions in eastern Ukraine since 2014.
